Is the recurrent occurrence of suicidal thoughts depression? How should it be treated?

Must read

When we are hit and suffer from psychological trauma, we often have thoughts of despair and suicide, which then lead to suicidal ideation. However, for patients with depression, they may occasionally have thoughts of suicide. So, if a person repeatedly has thoughts of suicide in life, does that mean they have depression?

When there are no external disturbances, if a person still frequently experiences thoughts of suicide and for a prolonged period, to some extent, it can be diagnosed as depression. In such cases, if timely treatment is not sought, not only suicidal ideation may occur, but there may also be attempts at suicide.

In general, when depression is detected early and treated proactively, it can be effectively controlled. In the early stages of depression, treatment can be administered, typically taking medication for 2-3 months, which can significantly improve the patient’s original depressive symptoms, effectively control and alleviate the condition. However, if the patient does not seek medical attention promptly and receive effective treatment, the condition may progress to a chronic phase, requiring a longer treatment duration of at least two to three years to gain control, recover, and reduce the likelihood of recurrence.

In the process of treating depression, apart from the initial stage, there are three additional treatment stages: consolidation treatment, maintenance treatment, and drug withdrawal observation treatment.

Consolidation treatment refers to the period between four months to half a year after the start of treatment, aiming to consolidate the treatment from the acute phase and prevent the recurrence of depression in patients. Following the consolidation period is the maintenance phase, lasting one to five years, where the treatment duration may be adjusted based on the patient’s condition. The goal of this stage is to prevent a relapse of the patient’s condition. Lastly, there is the drug withdrawal observation period treatment, focused on quickly controlling symptoms.

In addition to the involvement of mental health professionals, patients need cooperation from family members, and they must adhere to medical advice, take medication at scheduled times and doses, without altering the dosage on their own. Patients should also learn self-relaxation techniques, engage in hobbies, read books, watch TV, movies, listen to music, exercise, and explore activities that do not harm their bodies or others. All methods that help them overcome the depressive state are worth trying.

For the patient’s family and friends, it is essential to show patience with the patient. If suicidal thoughts are noticed, avoid excessive blame or reprimand, and instead, offer understanding and tolerance. As the closest individuals to the patient, during the treatment of depression, they must provide ample care and assistance, instill confidence, encourage active participation in treatment, ultimately helping patients overcome depression.
