Correct method for switching newborns to formula milk

Must read

The baby’s stomach is very delicate, changing formula requires extra care, and taking a gradual transition approach is crucial. If not done properly, it can lead to feeding refusal, constipation, and other issues for the baby. Therefore, transitioning formula for newborns correctly is a process that cannot be ignored. How can we ensure a smooth transition when changing formula?

Each formula has its unique nutritional composition and taste. Parents should select the appropriate formula based on the baby’s specific situation. Considering the weak absorption capacity of the baby’s digestive system, there may be mild reactions like slight diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, or mood swings during the formula transition. Following the principle of gradual progression becomes especially important to help the baby adapt to the new formula.

The specific transition steps involve mixing the old and new formula in proportions, gradually adjusting the ratio, allowing the baby to gradually adapt to different nutrients and flavors: – In the initial stage, try four parts of the old formula and one part of the new formula, observe the baby’s mental state and bowel movements, continue for 3-5 days, and if there are no adverse reactions, continue with this ratio. – Subsequently, gradually reduce the proportion of the old formula and increase the proportion of the new formula, for example, three parts old to one part new, also observe for 3-5 days. – Then adjust to one part old formula to three parts new formula, and one scoop old to four scoops new, closely monitor the baby’s adaptation at each stage. – The ultimate goal is to transition entirely to the new formula, with zero parts old formula and five parts new formula, observe for a few days to ensure the baby adjusts well.

For transitioning from breast milk to formula, as formula lacks the enzymes in breast milk that aid digestion, it is recommended to start with small amounts, adding only a small scoop of formula each time, gradually increasing the amount after confirming no adverse reactions until fully replacing. This way, the baby can smoothly transition between breast milk and formula, avoiding discomfort.
