The cause of dysmenorrhea. Will dysmenorrhea really disappear after giving birth?

Must read

Dysmenorrhea is a problem faced by many women. There is a common belief that “dysmenorrhea resolves on its own after childbirth.” Is this statement accurate? Gynecological experts point out that dysmenorrhea can be categorized into primary and secondary types. The former is related to physiological processes, while the latter is associated with gynecological conditions such as endometriosis and uterine fibroids. Giving birth can alleviate certain dysmenorrhea conditions to some extent, especially for women experiencing difficulty in menstrual blood flow due to excessive uterine curvature or tight cervix, the physiological changes brought about by childbirth may reduce their dysmenorrhea. However, this is not a universal rule. For secondary dysmenorrhea caused by gynecological conditions, postpartum period may not alleviate the symptoms; instead, it may lead to increased menstrual flow or prolonged cycle.

It is worth noting that dysmenorrhea in adolescent girls is often primary, and typically improves as they age and their endocrine system matures. The reasons for dysmenorrhea vary at different ages, from inadequate physiological regulation during early menstruation in young girls to uterine abnormalities that middle-aged women may face. The management and focus of dysmenorrhea differ across various age groups. Regarding dysmenorrhea, experts suggest that unmarried women maintain good menstrual hygiene habits, avoid intense physical activities and stimulating foods, keep a positive mood, and intervene with medical methods when necessary.

As for the popular methods to alleviate dysmenorrhea, such as consuming sweets, drinking brown sugar water, massaging, or using a hot water bottle, their effectiveness varies from person to person, and some methods may be misleading. For instance, high sugar intake may interfere with nutrient absorption, hindering the relief of dysmenorrhea; the efficacy of brown sugar water lies more in psychological comfort and body warmth; and intense massage during menstruation may not be suitable for all constitutions. Understanding dysmenorrhea correctly and seeking timely medical advice is key to addressing this issue effectively.

Dysmenorrhea not only affects quality of life but also serves as an early warning sign for gynecological conditions. It is linked to breast diseases, accelerated aging, impacts on sexual harmony, and even infertility. Therefore, dysmenorrhea should not be seen as a normal phenomenon to be ignored. Scientific understanding and timely treatment are crucial for effectively managing dysmenorrhea and ensuring women’s health.
