Recalling my childhood, I often went out with my mother to forage for wild vegetables. In those days, wild vegetables, despite their various forms, all seemed like ordinary weeds. Plantago, or Plantago lanceolata, was one such vegetable; it often troubled farmers because it could harm crop growth. However, from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, Plantago is a precious herb. Drinking its infused water can bring numerous health benefits.

The benefits of Plantago include alleviating coughs. When the weather turns cool, coughs become a common issue, and I would often wake up in the morning to the sound of my mother coughing, accompanied by phlegm that was difficult to expel. At such times, a cup of Plantago tea might help. Continuous drinking can promote mucous secretion in the airways, keeping them clear and aiding in phlegm expulsion and cough relief, with noticeable effects.

Furthermore, Plantago possesses natural anti-inflammatory properties and contains antibacterial components, which help eliminate pathogens in the body and prevent inflammation. Long-term consumption can also activate phagocytes, timely removing harmful cells and protecting overall health.

For eye protection, Plantago is also beneficial. Modern life is inseparable from electronic screens, leading to eye fatigue becoming the norm, and even causing eye diseases. Plantago water can help alleviate visual fatigue and has supportive effects on eye diseases, reminding us to cherish and care for this precious gift of sight.

In addressing the constipation issues caused by prolonged sitting and insufficient water intake, Plantago water can also provide assistance. It stimulates intestinal secretion, enhances intestinal motility, promotes waste excretion, and alleviates constipation, positively impacting the prevention of hemorrhoids as well.

Daily consumption can gradually strengthen immunity, reinforcing the body’s ability to resist viruses and bacteria, as if building a solid defense line for the body.

However, while enjoying the benefits of Plantago, one must also be mindful of its cold nature; it is not recommended for those with weak spleens and stomachs or internal damp-heat. Additionally, due to its diuretic effects, pregnant women should avoid drinking it to prevent affecting fetal health.

Although Plantago can alleviate symptoms, it cannot replace formal medical treatment. If symptoms do not improve, medical attention should be sought promptly. The foundation of maintaining health lies in a balanced diet, adequate rest, stress reduction, and a positive mindset. On this basis, supplemented with Plantago water, one can achieve even greater benefits.
