What kind of pot is good for decoction? Pay attention to these matters when decocting herbs.

Must read

Choosing the right pot is crucial for decocting Chinese herbal medicine, and clay pot is the preferred choice. Being mainly composed of silicates, it has stable chemical properties, is less likely to react with the medicine, and has slow and uniform heat conduction, effectively reducing water evaporation to ensure the medicinal efficacy. Additionally, it is reasonably priced. Therefore, ceramic clay pots or earthen pots have become the ideal choice for decocting medicine.

The steps for decocting medicine are briefly described as follows: Firstly, soak the herbs in cold water for 30 to 60 minutes, ensuring the water level is 3 to 5 centimeters above the herbs. Then, bring it to a boil over high heat and simmer on low heat to maintain a slight boil. For exterior-releasing herbs (e.g., cold medicine), decoct for 15 to 20 minutes, while other herbs require 40 to 50 minutes. For the second decoction, add a small amount of hot water until it reaches 2 to 3 centimeters above the herbs and simmer for about 20 to 30 minutes.

When decocting medicine, pay attention to the following: Herbs usually do not need washing. If necessary, quickly rinse to avoid prolonged soaking. The amount of water should sufficiently cover the herbs, typically 2 to 3 centimeters above, and for highly absorbent herbs, timely water replenishment is necessary. Regarding heat control, boil over high heat then switch to low heat. For exterior-releasing medicine, maintain high heat throughout. Decoction time varies based on the medicinal properties; generally, decoct for 20 to 25 minutes in the first round and 15 to 20 minutes in the second round. Exterior-releasing and tonifying herbs have different timings. Herbs are typically decocted twice, while tonifying herbs may require three times, mixing the decoction for better effectiveness. Finally, removing the pot’s odor can be achieved by cooking porridge or cleaning with vinegar.

Proper decoction not only retains the medicinal efficacy but also ensures the safety and effectiveness of the medicine. Following the above guidelines during the decoction process will help enhance the therapeutic effect of Chinese medicine.
