When scraping, how much do you understand about the tools, techniques, and force used during scraping?

Must read

Today, with the popularization of health concepts, traditional Chinese medical health methods are increasingly favored, such as moxibustion, cupping, acupressure, etc. However, the ancient technique of Gua Sha evokes complex emotions: it is loved for its significant effects, yet feared for the pain during the process.

Gua Sha, as a simple traditional health technique, only requires a Gua Sha board for application. In the past, when resources were limited, people even creatively used coins and burning white liquor to perform back Gua Sha.

The basic principle of Gua Sha is based on the theory of meridians and acupoints. By scraping and rubbing the body surface, acupoints are stimulated, causing red marks or blood spots on the skin, thereby promoting blood circulation and accelerating detoxification.

This method is particularly recognized by the older generation who often use Gua Sha to address symptoms such as fever, with practical evidence showing its significant detoxification effects. The practice of Gua Sha also involves the concepts of “tonifying” and “purging.”

“Purging” means eliminating toxins or other harmful substances from the body, suitable for acute illnesses or young people with strong constitution. Scraping in the opposite direction of the meridians, combined with cupping, can enhance the purging effect, quickly reducing fever and detoxifying.

In contrast, “tonifying” is suitable for long-term patients or individuals with weak constitution. By scraping along the meridians gently and combining with warm moxibustion, it can achieve the effect of nourishing and strengthening the body.

Choosing the right Gua Sha tool is crucial; modern options are no longer limited to coins, with a variety of Gua Sha boards available in the market. Water buffalo horn Gua Sha boards are beneficial for promoting blood circulation, while jade Gua Sha boards can nourish the skin and stabilize the mind. It is recommended to use lubricants such as plant oils, medicinal oils, or creams during Gua Sha to reduce skin friction.

The intensity of Gua Sha should be adjusted according to individual tolerance; purging may require more forceful scraping, while tonifying requires gentle and even techniques. Correct application of wrist strength rather than arm strength is key to controlling the intensity of Gua Sha.

Although Gua Sha is beneficial, attention should be paid to the duration and frequency – more frequent or intense application is not necessarily better. Furthermore, Gua Sha is only a complementary health method and cannot replace proper medical treatment, especially for serious conditions like cancer. Women should avoid Gua Sha during menstruation to avoid affecting their health.

In conclusion, Gua Sha, as an ancient health technique, can bring certain health benefits when understood and applied correctly. However, it should be used with caution and tailored to individual circumstances.
