Preventing disabilities from diseases and sharing a healthy life
Proposal
Dear parents and friends from all walks of life:
August 25, 2024, is the eighth National Disability Prevention Day, and this year’s theme is “Preventing disabilities from diseases and sharing a healthy life.” Disability prevention is closely related to personal health, family happiness, and socio-economic development. During this year’s National Two Sessions, the topic of adolescent mental health attracted much attention from numerous representatives and members of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, sparking widespread social discussion. Adolescents are at a critical stage of growth, and various confusions in interpersonal relationships, pressing family expectations, and rapid changes in the social environment may strongly impact their minds, potentially leading to psychological disorders in severe cases. We understand well that if mental health issues are not timely addressed through prevention and intervention, they may become hidden “disabilities” in the growth journey of adolescents.
Adolescents are the future of the nation and the hope of the people; their mental health is not only related to personal happiness but also closely connected to family happiness and social harmony. The report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China clearly emphasizes the importance of “valuing mental health and mental hygiene.” The Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee stresses the need to “improve the social psychological service system and crisis intervention mechanisms.” This points the way for effectively addressing mental health and hygiene issues among adolescents in the new era.
Here, we sincerely appeal to the entire society:
Families are the first classroom for adolescents’ growth. Parents should provide sufficient love, understanding, and support to their children, carefully creating a warm and harmonious family environment, actively listening to the voices of their children, fully respecting their ideas and feelings, and making the family a true warm harbor for their hearts.
Schools are important places for adolescents’ learning and life. They should actively cooperate with relevant units to offer psychological health education courses and organize psychological counseling activities, helping adolescents correctly understand their emotions and learn to cope with stress and setbacks calmly.
All sectors of society should actively participate and strive to reduce the negative impact of adverse information on adolescents, providing them with abundant, healthy, and uplifting cultural products and activities, and creating a favorable social environment that cares for adolescents’ mental health, allowing every adolescent to grow up in health and happiness.
Adolescents should proactively embrace themselves, seriously read books related to mental health, actively participate in various rich and colorful social activities, and take the initiative to communicate with others. If they encounter difficulties or worries in life, they should not carry burdens alone; they can bravely open their hearts to trusted family members and close friends, or speak to mental health teachers about their inner thoughts.
Dear parents and friends from all walks of life, ensuring that every adolescent can grow healthily and happily is a pressing expectation of the Party and government and a common wish of hundreds of millions of families and all sectors of society. Let us take swift action and join hands to safeguard adolescents’ mental health, enabling every adolescent to have a heart as bright as the sun and grow into a pillar of the nation!
