Depression, also known as depressive disorder, presents significantly persistent low mood in the course of the illness. If reasonable treatment measures are taken after discovering depression and negative emotions are eliminated, the harm caused by depression can be reduced. Many people do not take early mild depression seriously, leading to severe depression, which may manifest in obvious physical symptoms, even feelings of suicide, and various symptoms of mental illness when severe.

1. Low Mood

The obvious characteristic of patients with depression is a low mood, feeling down and pessimistic all day, gloomy and uninterested in anything, unable to experience pleasure. As the condition progresses, many patients become pessimistic and desperate, feeling like every day is a struggle. Proper measures should be taken to counter low mood manifestations to gradually improve depression and see a positive change in mood.

2. Cognitive Impairment

Assessing whether cognitive abilities remain normal is crucial in diagnosing depression. Many individuals with depression experience blocked thinking processes, with dulled reactions and decreased cognitive abilities. They may exhibit reduced verbal fluency, slowed speech, difficulty responding, and a low tone of voice. Severe depression can lead to communication difficulties. Be alert to signs of cognitive impairment as it may indicate depression.

3. Reduced Volition

As depression progresses, volition decreases, leading to passive, lazy, and socially withdrawn behavior. There is a tendency to avoid social interactions, isolate oneself, and distance from family and friends. Reduced volition signals the need for awareness of depression, as emotional changes can significantly impact physical health.

4. Self-Denial

A clear sense of inferiority indicates the presence of depression. Negative and pessimistic thoughts, along with self-blame, can cause significant distress, lack of confidence, thoughts of despair, and suicidal ideation. This is the most dangerous symptom of depression and requires increased vigilance. If a friend constantly self-denies, shows pessimism, and negativity, it may be a sign of developing depression.

5. Decreased Memory

Noticing a decline in memory, attention disturbances, prolonged reaction time, increased alertness could be a sign of developing depression. Depression can impair brain function, resulting in cognitive decline and noticeable memory loss. If recent memory lapses, reduced spatial and language abilities are frequent, it could be a sign of progressing depression.

6. Insomnia

Adequate sleep at night is crucial for maintaining health. Many people affected by depression experience sleep disturbances, struggle to fall asleep peacefully, and may wake up easily in the middle of the night. If accompanied by other adverse symptoms like fatigue, physical pain, weight loss, decreased appetite, it could be a warning sign of depression. These physical symptoms are related to the health risks posed by depression and should be actively treated upon identifying disease characteristics.
