Summer vacation is approaching, at this time every year, parents can spend a long time with their children, but often face many troubles: mainly manifested in children becoming less “obedient” during the school break, the conflicts between parents and children intensify, some children even develop psychological issues and refuse to communicate with their parents.
Summer vacation psychological health problems
Why are they more common?
1. Disruption of study routine. Children suddenly relax from the tense study life, easily lose goals and motivation, lead irregular lives, play games at night, lack energy during the day. Prolonged exposure to this state can cause emotional disorders, including depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
2. Sudden changes in interpersonal relationships. Many children lack companionship at home during summer vacation, and cannot communicate with classmates like in school. Reduction in social interactions can lead to self-isolation over time, unwillingness to go out.
3. Escalation of conflicts between parents and children. With children on break spending more time with parents, previously subtle conflicts become more prominent, combined with rebellious behavior and strong self-centeredness typical of adolescence, intensifying parent-child tensions and leading to arguments.
4. Disparity between ideal and reality. Some parents always want to “take shortcuts” by enrolling children in various summer classes, increasing study pressure, which not only fails to produce improvement but also leads to psychological issues in children. It is essential to help children correctly address learning difficulties and intervene scientifically!
What should parents do?
Adolescence is the most sensitive and complex period psychologically, if these issues are not effectively addressed and adjusted during this phase, it could potentially impact the child’s entire life. Parents should guide children in the following aspects:
1. Help children establish good sleeping habits.
Adequate rest is crucial for maintaining the child’s physical health.
2. Engage in positive interactions with children.
Parents should spend more time with their children, show care, communicate more, and promptly help them answer questions and tackle problems. The warmth of the family is the best remedy for solving all of a child’s problems.
3. Plan a varied summer vacation schedule for children.
Parents should expose children to society more, allowing them to gain extracurricular knowledge. If there’s no time for a long trip, bringing children closer to nature in the countryside is beneficial. Additionally, cultivating children’s interests and hobbies, letting them socialize and engage in activities with friends, is also a good choice.
4. Arrange holiday study tasks reasonably.
If parents want their children to study more during the holidays, they should adhere to principles of moderation and adequacy, selecting appropriate supplementary classes, not tutoring every subject without focus, allocating study time moderately without excessively occupying the child’s vacation, progressing gradually to avoid causing significant psychological gaps in children.
