21-year-old Chen Yi is from Tianzhu County, Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, graduated from junior high school and entered the workforce. With a height of 178 centimeters and weight of 125 catties, he has a long figure and looks very stylish in photos. It’s hard to imagine that two years ago, he weighed 185 catties.
Before becoming a model, Chen Yi worked as a photography assistant in Lijiang County, Yunnan Province. With continuous exposure to the modeling industry and some models, he conceived a bold idea in his heart – to become a model. Whenever he saw the infectious smiles and confidence of models, Chen Yi was filled with longing and felt that he could do it too.
To pursue his dream, in February 2022, he decided to resign from his job in Lijiang and return home to lose weight. Initially, he did not go to the gym but exercised at home every day by doing aerobics, running, strictly controlling his diet, and maintaining good sleep.
Due to his large base, Chen Yi would get tired even after running 1 kilometer at the beginning. He had to gradually increase his running distance, practice Pamela’s aerobics for half an hour every day, record his daily exercise, and eat healthy weight-loss meals. He lost 20 catties in the first month, which gave him great confidence. “All the weight lost in the first month was just water,” Chen Yi said.
Chen Yi’s mother strongly supported his weight loss, believing that being too overweight is bad for health and can lead to obesity-related diseases. One day, while Chen Yi was exercising at home, his mother, sitting on the sofa playing with her phone, suddenly said, “Son, your legs look much smaller than before.” At that moment, Chen Yi felt that his efforts had paid off.
By the second month, Chen Yi was able to run 2 kilometers every day, eventually increasing it to 5 kilometers. During the weight loss process, he would eat some boiled vegetables, corn, eggs, and so on. Occasionally, when he felt extremely hungry, he would indulge in a meal. After persisting for half a year, Chen Yi lost 60 catties, his face slimmed down significantly, and his facial features became more defined.
“The biggest feeling from losing weight is not to treat it as a task but to make weight loss a natural part of life and execute it naturally,” Chen Yi commented after his successful weight loss.

In August 2022, after successfully losing weight, Chen Yi came to Guiyang to seek employment. Initially inexperienced, and facing livelihood issues, he had to work as a live streamer in a photography studio while actively seeking modeling jobs. After working for about half a year and saving some money, in March 2023, he quit his job again to pursue his modeling dream.
Bridal studios recruited free models, and Chen Yi actively applied in order to get more exposure and gain experience. There was a studio owner who felt that his smile was not natural and lacked camera presence, so Chen Yi saved up to get dental veneers and practiced smiling in front of the mirror every day.
When acting as a bridal model, Chen Yi had only four to five orders per month at the beginning. Each order required changing into four to five outfits in one day. During the shoots, he would actively communicate with the photographers to understand the style they wanted. Some required a more mature look, while others needed a youthful vibe. After accumulating 5 months of experience, from August 2023 onwards, Chen Yi noticed a significant increase in the number of orders.
“Word of mouth is crucial in our industry,” Chen Yi said. If photographers find you expressive with a good presence, they will recommend you to others when there are shooting needs.
Currently, Chen Yi’s work requires him to travel all over the country, with more shoots in Chengdu and Chongqing. Sometimes, he is busy with shoots for the entire month, going to several cities back-to-back in a week. Compared to before, his income has also increased significantly.

Chen Yi shares his weight loss experience and process on his Douyin account, attracting onlookers and receiving inquiries from people seeking weight loss tips. “The most unforgettable comment was when a netizen asked me if I had plastic surgery,” Chen Yi chuckled, saying that he really did not have plastic surgery.
When asked about the biggest changes brought by weight loss, he feels that he has become more disciplined and confident. He is now more willing to try different dressing styles and, when he likes a girl, dares to confess his feelings.
To maintain his physique, when not on shoots, Chen Yi regularly goes to the gym for strength training. As for future plans, he mentioned that he will continue as a model while also venturing into self-media to broaden his career path.
