After intercourse, the woman suddenly discovered blood on her underwear, causing great panic. Medically, vaginal bleeding during intercourse is also known as contact bleeding. With the improvement of everyone’s health concepts and the phenomenon of post-coital bleeding, patients can explain the situation to doctors.
In fact, there is no need to panic. Post-coital bleeding may have these possibilities, so knowing them early can prevent misunderstandings.
1. Menstrual bleeding
Young people are more sexually active, and often when a woman’s period has just ended, both partners may be eager to have intercourse. After intercourse, if the woman experiences slight bleeding or brownish discharge, it is mainly because the menstrual blood was not completely expelled. Therefore, it is important to avoid intercourse during menstruation, preferably waiting 3 days after the period to prevent infections and gynecological diseases.
2. Gynecological inflammation
This is a common situation where conditions like cervicitis, cervical polyps, candida vaginitis, trichomoniasis, or senile vaginitis in women can lead to bleeding after intercourse. Hence, when women have gynecological inflammation, they should avoid sexual activities to prevent worsening of the condition. Regular gynecological check-ups are essential for early detection and treatment.
3. Vaginal tear bleeding
Frequent bleeding after intercourse, especially in cases of long-term bleeding, can be attributed to vaginal tear bleeding, commonly associated with rough sexual activities. It could also be due to underdeveloped vagina, vaginal stenosis, unsuccessful vaginal healing post-surgery like hymen repair, or improper healing after procedures like hymen repair or hysterectomy. Harsh male actions, incorrect postures, or even intercourse during postpartum period can cause vaginal bleeding. Hence, it is crucial to reject violent sexual behaviors and avoid postpartum intercourse.
4. Cervical cancer
If the bleeding is not extensive, the color is bright red or there are blood streaks in the discharge, it is important to be cautious about early-stage cervical cancer. When the cervix is directly affected, it may rupture, with risk factors associated with middle-aged women, early marriage, early pregnancies, multiple births, and general poor health. However, cervical cancer is now also affecting younger women, possibly linked to early sexual activity, multiple abortions, and multiple sexual partners. Hence, regular gynecological check-ups, cervical cancer screenings, targeted examinations, and early detection are crucial.
5. Hymen rupture
During a girl’s first sexual intercourse, she may feel shy and nervous, leading to hymen rupture, which typically results in minimal bleeding. After the hymen rupture, it takes about a week for the wound to heal before engaging in sexual activities. For a woman’s first sexual experience, both partners must be gentle, engage in foreplay, and avoid being aggressive. Nevertheless, some women may not bleed during their first sexual intercourse.
