Improve urinary frequency, urgency, and pain, remember these six acupoints!

Must read

Many male patients in outpatient clinics complain of suddenly increased urination frequency, up to a dozen times in half a day, only to find out upon examination that it is due to chronic prostatitis.

In addition to urinary frequency, urgency, pain, incomplete urination, chronic prostatitis patients also experience swelling, pain, discomfort in the scrotum, testicles, lower abdomen, and in severe cases, they may also have erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, and other sexual dysfunction.

Other than medication, are there any simple and convenient methods to help improve symptoms such as urinary frequency and incomplete urination?

It is recommended to press and massage six acupoints including Qihai, Guanyuan, Zhongji, Tianshu, Shuidao, and Zusanli.

Qihai

Location: Qihai belongs to the Ren Meridian, the original point of the Conception Vessel, on the lower abdomen, on the midline below the navel, about 1.5 inches.

Effect: Promotes lower abdominal function, replenishes original qi, and disperses stagnant qi. Pressing and massaging this acupoint can improve the urinary frequency, difficult urination, and cloudy urine caused by chronic prostatitis.

Patients with weak cold gastrointestinal diseases can also use moxibustion in combination for a better effect in warming yang, tonifying deficiency, and strengthening the middle Jiao.

Guanyuan

Location: Guanyuan belongs to the Ren Meridian, the meeting point of the foot Three Yin meridians and the Ren Meridian, also known as the point of the Small Intestine. It is located on the lower abdomen, on the midline below the navel, about 3 inches.

Effect: Nourishes the kidney, strengthens the essence, replenishes original qi, and secures the yang to treat conditions like low blood pressure, neurasthenia, and male sexual dysfunction.

Zhongji

Location: Zhongji belongs to the Ren Meridian, the meeting point of the foot Three Yin meridians and the Ren Meridian, also known as the meeting point of the Bladder. It is located on the lower abdomen, on the midline below the navel, about 4 inches.

Effect: As the meeting point of the Bladder meridian, Zhongji is where the qi of the bladder gathers, assisting in promoting bladder function, clearing damp-heat, and treating conditions like urinary frequency, incontinence, and diarrhea.

Modern clinical practice often uses the Ren Meridian acupoints to treat urinary system diseases, such as needling or electroacupuncture on Zhongji, Guanyuan, Qihai, etc., treating incontinence, prostate hyperplasia, neurogenic bladder, etc.

Additionally, the Ren Meridian originates below Zhongji, from the pubic region, ascends the midline of the abdomen, reaches Guanyuan, and gathers at the front to treat reproductive system diseases such as irregular menstruation, leukorrhea, spermatorrhea, and erectile dysfunction.

Tianshu

Location: Tianshu belongs to the Stomach Meridian of Foot Yangming, situated on the abdomen, horizontally at the center of the navel, about 2 inches to the side of the midline.

Effect: An important acupoint for treating anterior and posterior Yin diseases, it can be used to treat diseases of the urinary system, promoting urination, regulating the intestines, and clearing damp-heat.

Modern research has also found that massaging Tianshu can tonify the spleen and stomach, effectively treating indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea, and other conditions.

Shuidao

Location: Shuidao belongs to the Stomach Meridian of Foot Yangming, located on the lower abdomen, 3 inches below the navel, about 2 inches to the side of the midline.

Effect: Used to treat conditions like difficult urination, edema, nephritis, cystitis, among others. Massaging Shuidao can regulate both ways, beneficial for the transformation and distribution of fluids, aiding in the movement of intestinal residues and helping in cases of incomplete urination, urinary frequency, and abnormal fluidic discharge.

Zusanli

Location: Zusanli belongs to the Stomach Meridian of Foot Yangming, located on the outer side of the lower leg, 3 inches below the calf’s head, on the line connecting the calf’s head and Jiexi.

Effect: Dries dampness, promotes the transformation of spleen fluids, and encourages stomach qi. Massaging Zusanli can enhance the digestion of the middle Jiao, promote qi circulation, and further improve bladder control function, reducing symptoms of urgency and frequency of urination.

Chronic prostatitis is often accompanied by psychological symptoms such as insomnia, vivid dreams, anxiety, and depression. Therefore, learning to relax, maintaining confidence, and a positive mental state are crucial as the first step in treatment.

It is also important to actively adjust lifestyle habits: avoid prolonged sitting; refrain from spicy foods, smoking, and alcohol; avoid unclean behaviors, maintain moderate sexual activity, and avoid holding urine when needed to prevent worsening conditions.
