Sam mineral water is rumored to be able to produce boys and is sold out as people scramble for it, superstition mixed with pseudo-science is the most captivating.

Must read

Many people are obsessed with the idea of giving birth to a baby boy. Although childbirth is mainly done by women, some hope to have a boy, and this obsession is not easily understood by the average person.

When it comes to having a baby boy, there are various beliefs from what to eat, what to wear, what to worship, to what positions to use.

Several years ago, there was a so-called master who sold a pair of ordinary vitamin pills for thousands of yuan, claiming it could guarantee the birth of a boy and offering a full refund if a girl was born. Many people, thinking they had nothing to lose, bought them to give it a try.

Eventually, the truth came out that the master was just selling regular vitamin pills and making money off the unwarranted hopes of those wanting to have boys.

Unexpectedly, some people who desire sons have recently been rushing to buy a certain brand of mineral water, believed to be pure and slightly alkaline. According to some legend, this water contains sperm with Y chromosomes, which are believed to survive better in a weak alkaline environment, leading these people to think they can conceive sons by drinking this water.

One might wonder, despite their beliefs in Y chromosomes and weak alkaline environments, if they need a certain level of money to buy goods in the first place.

These individuals, claiming to understand science a little, yet still clinging to traditional superstitions, seem to overlook the necessity of genuine scientific knowledge beyond short videos. Science should have a valid origin, with actual experiments and conclusive evidence to back it up.

Speaking more plainly, changing your body’s pH by drinking water seems less effective than simply changing your attitude. Oh, and there’s an old saying: “boys like acidity, girls like spiciness.”

Interestingly, those who possess a bit of basic knowledge but remain superstitious about traditions are the most alarming group today.

Having received a comprehensive modern education, one would understand that there is no significant difference between having a boy or a girl. Gender equality is a fundamental principle. In the past, people favored having sons for their ability to work and defend their homeland, but in today’s era where intelligence, not physical strength, matters most, the value created by men and women is indistinguishable.

For most individuals, the one who cares for and loves them the most is often their mother. Undoubtedly, the greatest love in this world is motherly love.

Yet, even in these circumstances, there are always those who insist on having a son.

Many assume that the younger generations, like the 80s and 90s-born, have moved past such biases. However, that’s not entirely true. Take for instance my colleague born in ’85 who had two girls before finally having a boy this year, fulfilling his desire.

One might argue that my colleague, deeply involved in the electronics industry for years, is not lacking in education. Yet, he persisted in wanting a son despite receiving modern education.

The current popularity of the certain brand of water in the market reflects this deep-seated phenomenon.

The root cause of this phenomenon lies in individuals’ limited exposure to knowledge education without a corresponding respect for humanities. For these men, who are concerned with Y chromosomes and slight alkalinity, it’s no different from believing in ancient Chinese principles like yin and yang, or excessive dampness; their beliefs are essentially a mixture of pseudoscience, leaving them half-informed but overly confident.

There are many such people today, whether obsessed with having sons, buying smartphones, or acquiring cars.

Some believe that certain phone systems perform better and outperform all others;

Others think adding “smart” to certain products can enhance their own intelligence.

While these individuals may excel in their respective fields and receive due recognition and social status, they lack the fundamental ability to think critically or engage with modern logic, remaining akin to educated “peasants” in today’s society.

To a certain extent, these individuals will likely pass down these attitudes to their children, perpetuating this cycle of superstition and consumerism for generations to come.
