Should the foreskin be circumcised? Understand these before deciding! So as not to undergo unnecessary circumcision.

Must read

In the impression of many people, circumcision (i.e., the surgical removal of the foreskin, commonly known as circumcision) seems to be the “patent” of young children.

However, for adult males, this surgery also holds significant importance, especially when dealing with issues such as phimosis, recurrent infections, and impacts on partner health, making circumcision an indispensable treatment method.

Director Zhang Huan, a chief physician in the Department of Urology at the Changsha Citic Xiangya Reproductive and Genetic Specialized Hospital, reminds that whether circumcision is necessary depends on the following situations.

1. Phimosis and recurrent infections

Phimosis refers to a condition where the opening of the foreskin is too narrow to easily retract and expose the glans. This not only makes daily cleaning difficult but also contributes to the accumulation of smegma, which can lead to infections such as balanitis.

For adult males, long-term phimosis may result in recurrent inflammation, severely affecting the quality of life. At this point, circumcision becomes an effective treatment option.

By removing the excess foreskin, the glans is fully exposed, effectively resolving cleaning difficulties and reducing the risk of infection.

2. Unexplained gynecological infections in partners

In addition to the impact on men’s health, phimosis and excessive foreskin length may also pose a threat to the health of partners. Due to the accumulation of dirt and bacteria under the foreskin, pathogens may thrive and transmit to partners, leading to unexplained gynecological infections in women.

In such cases, undergoing circumcision is not only taking responsibility for one’s own health but also showing care for a partner’s health. The surgery can effectively reduce the risk of pathogen transmission, protecting partners from infection.

3. What are the advantages of circumcision?

Circumcision, as a well-established surgical procedure, has multiple advantages. First, the procedure is relatively simple and quick, generally performed in an outpatient setting without the need for hospitalization.

Secondly, the outcome of the surgery is precise, typically resolving issues related to phimosis and excessive foreskin length completely. Moreover, recovery is swift, allowing patients to return to normal life and work in a short time.

Most importantly, the surgery effectively prevents infections such as balanitis, improving the quality of life.

4. To recover quickly, pay attention to these points before and after surgery

Although circumcision offers many advantages, to ensure a quick recovery, patients must pay attention to the following points before and after the surgery:

1. Preoperative preparation

Patients should undergo a comprehensive physical examination and blood tests to ensure surgical safety. Additionally, the genital area should be cleaned before the procedure to reduce the risk of infection.

2. Choosing the surgical method

Currently, there are various methods for circumcision, such as traditional circumcision and stapling surgery. Patients should choose the method that best suits their situation based on personal conditions and doctor’s recommendations.

3. Postoperative care

After surgery, patients should ensure adequate rest, avoid intense exercise and sexual stimulation. It is also important to follow medical advice regarding medication and dressing changes to promote wound healing.

In conclusion, circumcision is not only an option for children but also holds great significance for adult males. When facing issues such as phimosis, recurrent infections, and impacts on partner health, patients should actively consider surgical treatment options and follow their doctor’s guidance for surgery and postoperative care.
