Hair Health Knowledge: How Traditional Chinese Medicine Views Hair Health

Must read

Hair is closely related to our body’s health, and its condition can reflect the health of the internal organs. According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, hair not only represents the “surplus of blood” but also reflects the “essence of the kidneys,” closely related to several organs such as the spleen, stomach, liver, and kidneys. For example, when the liver stores sufficient blood, the hair can be adequately nourished; the spleen is responsible for transporting nutrients to ensure the whole body, including the hair, receives nourishment; and the essence in the kidneys is the basis of life, playing a key role in the growth and health of the hair.

When hair abnormalities occur, such as premature graying or hair loss, it may be a warning signal from the body. For instance, premature graying in youth may be related to genetics, mental stress, or certain diseases (such as tuberculosis, gastrointestinal diseases). Premature graying and hair loss may also indicate thyroid problems, diabetes, anemia, or psychological trauma. Moreover, specific hair issues may also indicate heavy metal poisoning, deficiency of qi and blood, or insufficient kidney qi.

It is worth noting that some hair loss conditions like hereditary baldness may be passed down through generations in a family; while alopecia areata, commonly known as “ghost shaving head,” is usually related to the immune system and emotional state. These phenomena remind us that changes in hair should not be ignored, as they may be external manifestations of internal health problems.

In summary, the condition of the hair can reflect the health of the internal organs, especially the functions of the spleen, liver, lung, and kidneys. Maintaining the health of these organs is crucial for the normal growth of hair. Therefore, when faced with abnormal changes in hair, we should pay sufficient attention, promptly identify and address potential health issues to prevent and treat diseases. In daily life, paying attention to hair health means caring for our overall well-being.
