As one of the most common metabolic diseases, diabetes has led to a plethora of medications tailored for different patients, among which the most frequently used is metformin. As the first-line hypoglycemic drug for diabetes, metformin lowers blood sugar by reducing insulin resistance, promoting the peripheral tissue’s utilization of glucose, and inhibiting hepatic glucose output. However, if used improperly, it may cause unexpected harm to the body.
In 2017, Wang Hua, a 47-year-old employee at a large company, had entered into management, yet his work pressure showed no sign of easing. Fortunately, Wang Hua was able to alleviate stress through his love of food, and under high pressure, his food intake increased visibly, almost exclusively consisting of high-fat and high-calorie foods. This indiscriminate eating habit had long buried a time bomb in his body.
In mid-August, under the blazing sun outside, Wang Hua felt dry and thirsty despite sitting in an air-conditioned office. He spent almost the entire day with a water cup in hand, and his frequency of urination naturally increased significantly. Seeing Wang Hua walk back and forth between the office and the restroom every day, colleagues teased him about possibly having kidney issues. Wang Hua smiled it off, attributing it merely to being in an air-conditioned room for too long and being dehydrated, without thinking much of it.
Half a month later, Wang Hua’s wife noticed that his already thin face had become somewhat sunken, but during this time, Wang Hua’s food intake had not decreased, and he was even eating more.
