Dr. Yuan Ding: Can hypertensive patients eat eggs? Reminder: If you don’t want high blood pressure, you really should eat less of these 3 foods!
Hello everyone! I am Director Yuan Ding from the Cardiology Department of the Second Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital in Guangdong Province, your physician friend. I hold regular consultations at Hongyun Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic.
Recently, there was a 65-year-old patient, Mr. Liu, at the outpatient clinic. He mentioned that he regularly took his medication on time and controlled his diet, but why couldn’t his high blood pressure be lowered, and he always felt dizzy, blurry vision, palpitations, and chest tightness?
Upon careful inquiry, I found out that Mr. Liu eats 3 eggs every day because he heard from others that elderly people are prone to muscle atrophy and should pay special attention to protein supplementation.
So I advised Mr. Liu to eat eggs in moderation, 4 eggs per week is sufficient, overeating can lead to elevated blood pressure. This is because eggs are rich in cholesterol, and their deposition in blood vessels can cause arteriosclerosis, worsening the condition of hypertension.
I also prescribed a Chinese herbal medicine formula for Mr. Liu. After one month, he reported that his dizziness, blurry vision, palpitations, and chest tightness had disappeared, and his blood pressure had decreased. I switched him to antihypertensive medication and instructed him to take the medication on time and control his diet.
Remember, hypertensive friends: besides eggs, these 3 types of foods should also be eaten sparingly:
1. High-sodium foods
Excessive sodium intake can lead to water and sodium retention, increase blood volume, and cause high blood pressure.
In addition to table salt, high-sodium foods like pickled foods, salted vegetables, salted fish, soy sauce, etc., contain a large amount of sodium, which hypertensive patients should try to avoid.
2. High-sugar foods
Long-term high-sugar diets release a large amount of insulin in the body, which not only damages the vascular endothelium but also causes abnormal blood vessel constriction, leading to high blood pressure.
High-sugar foods, such as candy, cookies, cakes, beverages, milk tea, etc., should be avoided by hypertensive patients as much as possible.
3. High-fat foods
High-fat foods are rich in saturated fats and cholesterol. Excessive intake can easily cause atherosclerosis and lead to high blood pressure.
High-fat foods, such as fatty meats, cream, cheese, etc., should be avoided by hypertensive patients as much as possible.
