On August 6th, the First Rehabilitation Hospital of Shanghai collaborated with the Pingliang Community Health Service Center to visit the Poly HelianthiCare Home and carry out the “Recognizing Cognitive Impairment, Helping the Elderly Age Gracefully” health education activities, providing elderly friends with lectures on cognitive impairment in the elderly, medical consultations, cognitive impairment screenings, and other services, attracting active participation from elderly friends and their families.
During the lecture session, Dr. Zhao Yiwen, a specialist in Neurological Rehabilitation, presented on the topic “What is cognitive impairment?”, succinctly explaining the causes, risk factors, early identification methods, as well as effective prevention and treatment strategies related to cognitive impairment to elderly friends. Dr. Zhao emphasized the important role of families in the prevention and care of cognitive impairment, reminding family members to pay attention to the daily changes in the elderly. When early symptoms such as memory loss and difficulty in speech expression occur, it is important to provide more care, attention, and understanding and seek medical help promptly. Additionally, Dr. Zhao provided practical caregiving tips to elderly friends and their families.
In the interactive session, Nurse Manager Wang Yaqin and Nurse Jiang Lili led the elderly friends in finger rehabilitation exercises, engaging in a series of simple yet targeted finger movements exercises that not only effectively enhanced finger flexibility but also stimulated nerves and enhanced brain function cleverly. The elderly friends enjoyed the exercise in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere and were warmly welcomed by everyone.
At the event site, in the area of cognitive function assessment and risk screening, medical staff integrated professional assessment tools and a convenient mobile app to conduct cognitive assessments through a combination of online and offline cognitive assessment methods using a cognitive scale screening. Director Zhang Yan of the Social Rehabilitation Service Center patiently guided the elderly friends in using the mobile app for self-assessment, provided personalized health advice and guidance based on the assessment results, helping elderly friends better understand their health conditions and master scientific health management methods.
“Do I have a risk of cognitive impairment, doctor?” “How should I decide on the initial choice of medications for cognitive impairment?”… In the expert consultation area, Dr. Zhou Zhe, Director of Neurological Rehabilitation, answered various questions from elderly friends and their families with high professionalism and patience, providing them with detailed professional answers, effectively alleviating their doubts and worries.
This activity enhanced the elderly friends’ correct understanding of cognitive impairment and promoted their attention to and emphasis on their own health. With the continuous arrival of the high-quality and professional rehabilitation medical service resources of the First Rehabilitation Hospital of Shanghai in the community, more care and support are provided to elderly friends, receiving warm responses and high praise from them. We will continue to move forward, safeguarding the sunset years of elderly friends, making each day full of sunshine and hope.
