Enjoy Growth | Get Ready with a Good “Heart” for the New School Term – Psychological Adjustment Guide for Elementary and Middle School Students

Must read

Psychology Classroom

The holiday passed quickly, and in the blink of an eye, the start of school is just around the corner. Some children are looking forward to the upcoming new semester, while others feel nervous about the routine of study that is about to begin. Some parents are worried when they see their children “not getting up in the morning, not sleeping at night, and not finishing homework”… In fact, in any case, it is a normal phenomenon. Parents can guide their children to fully prepare and make positive adjustments based on the developmental patterns of their children, so they can adapt to the new semester and embrace a new life.

Accept the Understanding of Various States

During the holiday, most children’s daily routines are not as intense and orderly as when they are in school. “Not wanting to sleep at night and not wanting to get up in the morning” is a common situation for some children during the holidays. When children think about the routines and study tasks after school starts, they may feel reluctant and anxious. This is a normal psychological reaction in people, and this state is temporary and can be changed through adjustment. Parents should accept their children, criticize less, and understand more.

Simulate the School Routine Adjustment

Parents should guide their children to gradually adjust their routines and actively adjust their sleeping patterns, leisure activities, and study schedules in accordance with the school routine after it starts. For example, parents can guide children to start going to bed and waking up early two weeks before school starts, establish regular routines, adjust the body clock according to the routines after school starts to adapt to the changes in daily schedules; on a daily basis, gradually reduce the use of electronic devices, increase reading time, organize study tasks, and address any deficiencies. Parents should avoid being impatient, not force children to immediately stop leisure activities, acknowledge their children’s efforts, adjust gradually, let children see their own strengths, and thus boost their confidence in problem-solving.

Set Clear Goals to Promote Growth

Parents and children together review the holiday plans, see what has been accomplished, what needs further effort in the future; at the same time, parents and children look ahead to the new semester, thinking about which subjects need special attention, what clubs to join, what new skills to learn, and then consider what preparations need to be made in advance, including preparing error notebooks and other stationery, engaging in some physical activities daily, in order to establish clear goals for the new semester in terms of study and life. Parents must be patient and review things together with their children.

Process-Oriented Planning

Based on the goals of the new semester, parents and children should create plans focused on the process rather than results such as scores or rankings. This will help children concentrate, clarify actions, pay attention to the process, avoid being overly anxious, and naturally improve their grades and personal growth. At the same time, parents should guide children to plan in short-term cycles, such as 2 to 3-day plans or 1 to 2-week schedules, to fit their own pace and make progress step by step, reflecting and improving. Parents should avoid constant nagging due to their own anxiety, patiently observe their child’s progress, acknowledge them, see their growth, and patiently guide them in reflection and adjustment, moving towards goals together with their children.

In conclusion, based on the developmental patterns of children, parents and children should actively adjust together, focus on school-home cooperation, communicate with the school more, and collaborate with the school in preparing for the new semester. Parents and children, through thorough preparation, gradual adjustment, and step-by-step adaptation, can set sail for the new semester and embrace a new life.
