Research has found that the incidence of depression is increasing year by year, and the causes of depression are quite complex, often related to psychological, social, environmental, biological factors, etc. After the onset of the disease, there will be noticeable changes in the body, which need to be dealt with early; otherwise, mild depression can progress to severe depression. Apart from increasing the difficulty of treatment, it will also bring endless suffering to the patients.

What are the common symptoms of depression?

1. Cognitive slowing down

People targeted by depression often exhibit many signs, such as cognitive slowing down. If this characteristic is present, do not mistake it for brain aging; it may also be related to depression. During the development process, patients may feel as if their brains are like rusted machinery, experiencing dull reactions, blocked thinking, and slow thinking and associative speed, leading to reduced language output, difficulty in response, and communication barriers. If these signs are present, combined with other manifestations, judgment should be made on whether depression is present.

2. Cognitive impairment

Depression can also cause cognitive impairment. Individuals with stable emotions and good brain function naturally have normal cognitive function. However, those tormented by depression may experience cognitive impairments. If not given attention, it may also lead to social dysfunction. Common situations include lack of concentration, delayed response time, increased alertness, learning difficulties, reduced memory capacity, alongside decreased thinking and spatial abilities.

3. Sleep disorders

Depression can lead to physical symptoms, not just mental and emotional changes. If significant sleep disturbances occur, such as difficulty falling asleep at night and being in a negative state, followed by certain bodily pains, fatigue, loss of appetite, it also needs attention. Prolonged negative emotions can lead to dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system and abnormal nerve function, manifesting physical characteristics. Correct treatment is necessary upon detecting disease signals.

4. Depressed mood

Feeling down is a common symptom of depression. During the onset of the illness, there will be significant emotional changes. Healthy individuals have stable emotions, show joy and interest in things, and have a positive outlook on life. However, after the onset of depression, there will be significant and persistent emotional lows, characterized by pessimism and depression. Initially feeling gloomy and disinterested, leading to reduced self-esteem, hallucinations, self-denial, and eventually suicidal thoughts.

Diagnosing depression requires systematic treatment, including medication and psychological therapy. Additionally, family and friends should provide warmth to patients to help them overcome the crisis as soon as possible.
