A one-month-old baby’s ears are oozing yellow fluid

Must read

The organs of newborns are not yet fully developed in the early stages of birth, especially the first month is critical, requiring careful care to prevent viruses and bacteria from invading. However, sometimes parents may encounter a situation where a one-month-old baby’s ears discharge yellow liquid, what is this situation? This condition often indicates that the baby may have middle ear infection, usually related to colds or accidental water entry into the ears. Infants with this condition often cry continuously and scratch their ears.

Yellow discharge from a baby’s ears is commonly due to middle ear infection, which is mostly caused by colds, bacterial infections, or foreign objects such as bathing water, dirt, or milk entering the ear. If a baby appears restless, frequently pulls their ears, emits a foul odor from the ear canal, and has yellow discharge, pediatrician should consider the possibility of pediatric otitis media. Initially, parents can try chloramphenicol eye drops in the ears once or twice a day in the morning and evening. If the symptoms do not improve after a few consecutive days and are accompanied by persistent high fever, the child should be promptly taken to a doctor, who typically prescribes antibiotics to reduce inflammation.

Additionally, yellow discharge from a baby’s ears may also be due to eczema, especially when yellow scabs appear around the ears. The key to solving this problem lies in treating the eczema itself, as the resolution of the eczema will naturally lead to the cessation of ear discharge.

Another possibility is otitis externa, which occurs when the hair follicles of the external auditory canal become infected with bacteria. Bacteria can easily enter during daily ear cleaning, bathing, or swimming. Children with otitis externa often have fever, cry, complain of ear pain in older children, refuse others to touch the affected ear, and even prefer not to lie on the affected ear side to avoid worsening discomfort. If single or multiple abscesses rupture and discharge pus, prompt medical attention should be sought for professional treatment.
