Can I still breastfeed my child after taking the milk-recovery medication?

Must read

Initially, newborns are primarily fed with breast milk, which is extremely important for the baby’s growth. However, as the child grows to a certain stage, they may face weaning. Even though weaning does not mean that the mother no longer produces milk, many mothers still have an adequate milk supply during weaning and may consider using milk-reducing medications. Some people are curious whether they can continue breastfeeding after taking milk-reducing medications.

Professionals recommend that after stopping the use of milk-reducing medications, wait for about three days. If there is still milk production, you can continue to breastfeed the baby. If the breast milk supply is insufficient, mothers should ensure intake of easily digestible and nutritious foods, drink chicken soup, fish soup, or bone broth to promote milk production. Also, ensure an adequate amount of rest, a positive mindset, maintain a regular daily routine, and create a comfortable environment, as all of these contribute to increasing milk supply. Breastfeeding is most beneficial for the baby.

It is important to note that milk-reducing medications contain hormonal components that temporarily suppress milk production. Therefore, it is not recommended to breastfeed during the medication period. In theory, even if breastfeeding is to be resumed, it should be done 72 hours after discontinuing the medication to ensure complete metabolization of the drug from the body. Additionally, after stopping the medication, consuming milk-promoting foods like fish soup can help stimulate milk production and ensure the baby receives healthier nourishment.

After taking milk-reducing medications, it is advisable to avoid immediate breastfeeding to prevent the drug components from affecting the infant. If you decide to continue breastfeeding, make sure to allow sufficient time intervals and take measures to promote healthy lactation.
