Challenges in breastfeeding newborns, what’s going on

Must read

Breastfeeding newborns often brings challenges to new mothers, who lack experience and often feel confused about feeding positions and methods. Unexpected situations that arise during the process further increase the difficulty of breastfeeding. The right method involves ensuring chest-to-chest contact, belly-to-belly contact, with the baby’s chin close to the breast. Moms should support the baby’s bottom with one hand and cradle the baby’s head and neck with the other elbow, allowing the baby to lie comfortably on the forearm. Avoid the baby’s head being too close to the breast to prevent breathing difficulties; the correct approach is to have the baby tilt their head back while nursing, making sucking easier and promoting breathing and jaw development.

When a mother has small or short nipples, making it difficult for the baby to latch on, both parties may feel frustration and fatigue. Ways to address this issue include gently pulling the nipple with three fingers several times a day, using a breast pump for suction practice, having an older child or partner help with sucking stimulation, and properly compressing the areola while nursing to ensure the nipple protrudes and avoid blocking the baby’s nostrils.

If the baby accidentally bites and breaks the nipple, it is usually due to improper feeding posture without the baby fully grasping the areola. Preventive measures include ensuring the baby grasps most of the areola, not just the nipple. Mothers should pay attention to nipple care, applying a small amount of breast milk to protect them after nursing, allowing them to air dry naturally for a few minutes before covering, wearing loose and comfortable underwear, using a tea strainer if necessary to reduce nipple abrasion discomfort, keeping the nipples clean, and promptly addressing any cracking.

In conclusion, breastfeeding is a process that requires patience and skill. By continuously practicing and learning the correct methods, new mothers can better handle challenges, ensure the baby receives sufficient nutrition, and protect their own health.
