When a baby’s eyes have red spots, it may not necessarily be a big problem, similar to bruises that occur on other parts of the body due to light impacts. This condition is called subconjunctival hemorrhage, which may result from incidental external force or natural rupture of small blood vessels when the baby cries or coughs, and in most cases, it can stop by itself and gradually fade away. However, the appearance of red spots may also be a symptom of conjunctivitis, a common eye disease that is easily influenced by external environments; viral and bacterial conjunctivitis are more common.
For viral conjunctivitis, treatment can involve the alternating use of corticosteroid and antiviral eye drops to alleviate symptoms. For bacterial conjunctivitis, antibiotics such as chloramphenicol eye ointment or erythromycin eye drops are necessary; in severe cases, oral or injectable antibiotics like amoxicillin or penicillin may also be required.
During this period, parents should pay attention to the child’s balanced diet, encourage drinking plenty of water, consume fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C, avoid spicy and greasy foods, maintain eye hygiene by cleaning secretions promptly, using saline solution for cleaning if necessary, and choosing ofloxacin or chloramphenicol eye drops as advised by a doctor. Viral conjunctivitis may require treatment with acyclovir eye drops, supplemented by cold compresses for relief.
Maintaining fresh indoor air, reducing irritants affecting the baby’s eyes, ensuring an adequate intake of fluids, and considering using gentamicin eye drops as a treatment option. While breastfeeding, mothers should avoid consuming spicy and irritating foods to promote the baby’s quick recovery. If any abnormalities are noticed in the baby’s eyes, seeking prompt medical examination is always the safest approach.
