Children with growth retardation will exhibit what kind of characteristics

Must read

Children are always deeply loved and cared for in the family, being considered as the focus of attention. Parents pay special attention to the comprehensive development of children, including intellectual, artistic, and musical aspects, aiming to enable children to keep pace with the rapidly changing society. However, during the journey of growth, some children may encounter developmental issues, and some parents may fail to identify these symptoms in a timely manner, leading to exacerbation of the problems. So, what are the specific manifestations of developmental disorders in children?

Among children facing challenges in brain development, about one-quarter have normal intelligence levels, half have mild to moderate intellectual deficits, and the remaining quarter face severe intellectual impairment. Many children show excessive sensitivity or lack of response when perceiving external stimuli, while some children may exhibit perceptual rigidity, making it difficult for them to process visual information correctly.

In terms of visual and auditory aspects, many children have visual problems, such as nearsightedness or internal strabismus, being quite common. Hearing loss is also a concern, especially for children with involuntary limb movements. They often have difficulties in distinguishing sound rhythms.

In terms of physical growth, although a few mildly affected children may approach a normal growth trajectory, the majority of children with developmental disorders lag behind in height and overall development compared to healthy children of the same age.

Language communication is another major challenge. Most affected children have language disorders, either expressing themselves poorly, having inaccurate pronunciation, stuttering, or even completely losing the ability to speak, which is particularly prominent in children with involuntary limb movements.

Posture control is also a major issue. These children may have abnormal postures, poor stability, and lack of coordination in movement or stillness, with asymmetry between the left and right sides. Some children’s heads may not be able to maintain a normal vertical position, leaning to one side or swaying.

Furthermore, a considerable proportion of children with brain developmental disorders (about 39% to 50%) experience epilepsy due to brain lesions, especially in children with severe intellectual impairment, who have a higher risk of developing epilepsy.

The impact of developmental disorders is multidimensional, ranging from intellectual decline to eventual brain damage, and further restrictions on language, hearing, and more. For severely affected children, the difficulties they face will be more complex, and the harm to them will be more profound. Therefore, in the process of children’s growth, parents should observe carefully, understand children’s various needs and deficiencies correctly, avoid misdiagnosis, ensure that children can grow up healthily, and avoid long-term impacts.
