Coughing during the postpartum period can lead to uterine prolapse

Must read

Coughing during the postpartum recovery period (commonly known as “the confinement period”) usually does not directly trigger uterine prolapse. Uterine prolapse is a medical condition with various causes, including injuries during delivery, increased abdominal pressure, or decreased estrogen levels, rather than being simply caused by coughing. In addressing this issue, it is important to seek medical attention promptly for a professional evaluation of the specific causes and the formulation of a personalized treatment plan.

During the delivery process, especially with natural childbirth, there may be damage to the pelvic floor muscles, which can lead to weakened support for the uterus. Actively engaging in pelvic floor muscle exercises postpartum can help strengthen muscle strength and alleviate uterine prolapse.

Increased abdominal pressure is another contributing factor; chronic coughing, habitual constipation, or abdominal obesity can exacerbate this condition. Managing these underlying conditions, such as using medications to control coughing as advised by a doctor, along with pelvic floor exercises and dietary adjustments to prevent constipation, are beneficial measures. Ensuring adequate hydration and consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables is also crucial.

With aging, postmenopausal women may experience a natural decrease in estrogen secretion, which can lead to laxity in the supporting tissues of the uterus, resulting in prolapse. At this time, following medical advice for appropriate estrogen supplementation, such as taking estradiol tablets, can be one of the relief measures.

In addition to the common causes mentioned above, pelvic tumors may also be a trigger for uterine prolapse. Therefore, it is important to reasonably arrange rest during the postpartum period, avoid overexertion, and pay attention to changes in one’s health status. If obvious signs of uterine prolapse are detected, seeking medical help promptly and taking appropriate treatment measures under the guidance of a doctor are essential for a smooth recovery.
