How many milliliters of milk powder should a newborn drink at a time

Must read

After enduring the hardships of childbirth, pregnant women may initially not have milk secretion. At this time, they may need to use formula to feed the newborn. However, the stomach capacity of a newborn is limited, and it is not necessary to strictly follow a fixed feeding amount. Instead, feeding should be flexible according to the baby’s needs, which is commonly known as feeding on demand. Typically, newborns need to be fed about 7 to 8 times a day, with each feeding interval approximately 3 hours.

At the beginning, when feeding the baby formula for the first time, 15-20 milliliters per feeding is sufficient. In the following days, gradually increase the amount by 10-15 milliliters per day until the feeding amount reaches 60 milliliters each time. Once the baby adapts to this amount, you can increase by another 10-15 milliliters every other day, with the ultimate goal being around 90 milliliters per feeding. This adjustment process lasts for about a week, after which the number of feedings can gradually decrease to 5-6 times a day.

To determine if the newborn is receiving sufficient nutrition through formula feeding, there are several observation indicators:

– Feeding frequency: Initially, newborns need to be fed 8-10 times a day, which decreases to about 8 times a day after 3 months. If the number of feedings is lower than this range, the baby may not be receiving adequate nutrition. – Excretion: A well-fed baby should have at least 6 urinations and 2-4 bowel movements per day, with the stools being yellow and soft. If the stool is greenish and sticky, it may indicate inadequate feeding. – Weight gain: A healthy baby should gain weight between 0 and 170 grams per week, which may increase to around 200 grams per week after 3 months. A monthly weight gain of 600 grams (under 6 months) or 500 grams (over 6 months) indicates sufficient feeding. – Sleep patterns: A well-fed baby can usually sleep for about 4 hours at a time. – Baby’s mental state: Bright eyes, alert responsiveness, happy emotions, and liking for activities are direct manifestations of sufficient food intake and good nutrition.
