How should scabs on a baby’s head be treated?

Must read

Babies often have a scabbing phenomenon on the top of their heads called “cradle cap,” which is very common. These scabs are similar to dry flakes of skin that continuously shed. Although they do not affect health, they may attract attention due to their appearance and occasional discomfort. Typically, this type of scabbing naturally disappears within 6 to 12 months after the baby is born, but in some cases, it may persist for a few years.

In addition to the scalp, similar conditions may also appear in the folds around the baby’s ears, eyebrows, and even armpits, known as “seborrheic dermatitis.” Although the exact cause is not yet clear, one view suggests that hormones the fetus receives in the mother’s womb stimulate the sebaceous glands, leading to excess oil secretion. It is important to note that the scabs are not related to hygiene or allergies, are not contagious, and in most cases, do not cause discomfort for the baby unless there is excessive accumulation causing mild itching.

When dealing with scabs on a baby’s head, there is no need for special treatment. To improve appearance, you can increase the frequency of washing their hair and use a soft brush or thick towel to gently wipe. For stubborn scabs, applying a small amount of natural plant oil (such as peanut oil, sesame oil, or olive oil), leaving it for a while, and then gently combing with a fine-tooth comb or soft brush can promote their shedding. Subsequently, use a mild baby shampoo for thorough cleansing, avoiding residue from scabs clogging the pores and causing adhesion. Gently massage and rinse to achieve a better cleaning effect.

It is important to handle the scabs gently during the treatment process, avoiding unnecessary interference, as over time, they will naturally fall off. When caring for a baby, applying a lubricant on the scalp can help in easy removal of scabs and ensure a comfortable process. In conclusion, approaching a baby’s scabs with patience and taking gentle care measures is sufficient.
