How to Adjust the Amount of Milk for Babies During the Confinement Period

Must read

During the postpartum period, the amount of food an infant consumes will gradually increase as they grow; however, this varies due to individual differences among infants, so when adjusting feeding amounts, the specific needs of the infant should be considered. Here are some suggestions for reference:

Feed according to the infant’s needs: Infants at this stage often require frequent breastfeeding. It is recommended to determine feeding times based on the infant’s hunger signals rather than strictly adhering to a schedule. When an infant cries, slightly opens their mouth, or smacks their lips, it is often a sign of hunger, and breastfeeding can be initiated at that time.

Pay attention to the infant’s feedback: Observing the infant’s behavior and reactions during breastfeeding is crucial. If the infant appears eager to eat and eventually shows signs of satisfaction, then releases the breast or bottle by themselves, it typically means they are full. Conversely, if the infant seems restless and pushes away from the breast or bottle, they may still be hungry.

Gradually increase the milk volume: As the infant grows, the amount of milk given each time should be gradually increased. A recommended increment is 10 to 15 milliliters at a time, progressing to an amount suitable for that infant’s intake.

Ensure the correct feeding position: A proper breastfeeding position is vital for the infant’s comfort. If the infant seems uncomfortable or resistant while feeding, it may be due to an improper position, which should be adjusted accordingly.

Always remember that each infant has unique needs, so when adjusting the milk volume, it is important to align with the infant’s actual situation. If the infant experiences frequent vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal swelling, or other abnormal symptoms, consult a professional doctor promptly to avoid delays.
