Most 6-year-old children are beginning to understand things, but some children may still experience bedwetting. There are various reasons behind this behavior: firstly, genetics, with around 30% of bedwetting children having fathers and 20% having mothers who experienced similar issues at the same age. If both parents have a history of bedwetting, there is a 40% chance their son will wet the bed, and a 25% chance for their daughter.
Secondly, some children may wet the bed due to a slower maturation of bladder function. These children have relatively small bladder capacity, leading to frequent urination with small amounts each time.
Furthermore, although rare, certain health issues can trigger bedwetting, such as urinary tract infections, structural abnormalities, spina bifida, etc. Asymptomatic bacteriuria and hypercalciuria should not be overlooked.
Sleep depth is also a common reason. Some children are very active before bedtime, leading to deep sleep and difficulty waking up, resulting in bedwetting unconsciously, especially after drinking a lot of water before sleep.
Enuresis can be further classified into different categories: some children urinate frequently day and night, related to poor bladder regulation; some mainly have nocturnal awakening problems, without daytime frequency, rooted in poor nerve system regulation; and another type of children have large urine output at night but few bedwetting episodes, with a balance issue in nighttime antidiuretic hormone secretion. Of course, there are also combinations of the above situations.
It is worth noting that long-term bedwetting may bring a series of health risks, including weakened immunity, reproductive system damage, gastrointestinal dysfunction, psychological health issues, and hindered intellectual development. Therefore, parents should pay attention to children’s bedwetting phenomenon and seek professional help in a timely manner.
