Why does a postpartum baby have anemia and what should be done?

Must read

If a baby shows signs of anemia during the postpartum period, it may be triggered by physiological factors, specifically including two types: hemorrhagic anemia and non-hemorrhagic anemia. In this situation, parents should take the child to the hospital for an examination in a timely manner and receive appropriate treatment based on the diagnosis.

Hemorrhagic anemia may arise from trauma or other bleeding conditions in the newborn. Minor injuries usually do not require special treatment but should be monitored closely; however, deep wounds should be addressed promptly by seeking medical attention and using hemostatic medications as directed by a physician, with examples such as vitamin K1 injections. At the same time, adjusting the diet to include sources of iron, such as animal liver and lean meat puree, is beneficial for recovery.

Non-hemorrhagic anemia is often caused by a lack of hematopoietic materials, with common types being iron deficiency anemia and megaloblastic anemia. Children with iron deficiency anemia can take ferrous succinate or ferrous fumarate and other iron supplements as advised by a doctor; for megaloblastic anemia, foods rich in chlorophyll and protein, such as spinach and eggs, should be consumed to aid recovery.

In addition to physiological factors, certain chronic diseases, such as gastrointestinal parasitic infections and hyperthyroidism, can also lead to anemia. In these cases, it is crucial to treat the underlying disease. For example, albendazole tablets can be used to treat parasitic infections, or in cases of hyperthyroidism, medications like propylthiouracil tablets may be used, with surgery considered in severe cases.

It is noteworthy that hemolytic anemia caused by excessive destruction of red blood cells can also lead to similar symptoms. The primary task in this situation is to identify and eliminate the cause, which may require infusion of specific red blood cells and the use of immunosuppressants, such as compound cyclophosphamide tablets or azathioprine tablets, as adjunctive treatment measures.
