Hot weather

Many people like to drink chilled beverages

Mr. Chen, 35 years old (alias), is no exception

He almost drinks two bottles of iced cola every night before going to bed

As a result, he recently “got poisoned”

According to Dr. Hong Pingping, an endocrinologist at Shaoxing Central Hospital, Mr. Chen was brought in critical condition, diagnosed with ketoacidosis and acute pancreatitis: “At that time, he had stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting. He went to the emergency room for two days of IV treatment, but still felt nauseous. He had a check-up, his blood sugar was over 54 points, and blood gas indicated acidosis. We admitted him for diabetic ketoacidosis, but after he was admitted, we found that he also had acute pancreatitis.”

Doctors told reporters that Mr. Chen is severely obese, loves to eat sweets, and drinks two bottles of cola every night before bed. In July this year, Mr. Chen experienced blurred vision and a 30-pound weight loss. He was happy at the time, but shortly after, he began to feel seriously unwell: “His mouth was extremely dry, he really wanted to drink water, but he was drinking soda, sweet milk, and fruits, and even at past 10 at night, he still wants to drink two bottles of cola.”

After targeted treatment, Mr. Chen’s condition has now stabilized. Doctors say that ketoacidosis is an acute complication of diabetes, and in recent years, they have encountered many similar cases in their clinical practice, with many younger than Mr. Chen also affected. Many young people, taking advantage of their youth, live unrestrainedly, eventually compromising their health. According to the latest epidemiological survey, the diabetes prevalence in China has reached 13%.

Doctors recommend that people of all ages take good care of their bodies, minimize consumption of carbonated beverages, avoid late-night snacking, and engage in more physical activity.
