Why is it said that “the poorer, the fatter, the richer, the thinner”?

In our impression, obesity has always been a symbol of wealth, indicating a good family condition that leads to eating more and hence being fat. Poor people, on the other hand, due to inadequate food intake, often suffer from malnutrition, resulting in a thin physique. However, things have changed now, with the rich getting in better shape while the poor are gaining weight.

This trend is actually quite normal, mainly due to a change in people’s dietary concepts. The rich are no longer content with mere subsistence; they pay attention to healthy eating, with food being properly balanced and calorie-controlled, making weight gain less of a concern. Moreover, as their wealth increases, so do their leisure activities and physical exercises, engaging in outdoor activities, hiring personal trainers to help improve their physique, naturally leading to better body shape.

For poor people, their focus on diet is not as diverse; they eat to get full and due to daily work requirements, consume more food, which can overload the digestive system, leading to indigestion and, over time, fat accumulation, resulting in obesity and an increased risk of illness.

The commonly referred to “three highs” issues are often labeled as diseases of the wealthy, yet among those affected, the proportion of poor people is relatively high. This is primarily because of irregular lifestyle habits; lack of awareness of the seriousness of bodily harm. Poor individuals only consider it a concern when their lives are at risk and lack the consciousness to lose weight. In contrast, the wealthy are more knowledgeable, value life, make appropriate changes based on medical advice, control their diet, lose weight, leading to a leaner physique.

In essence, the statement is not about exalting the wealthy or discriminating against the poor; it serves as a reminder for everyone to pay attention to body management. Regardless of wealth, life is finite with only one body. Physical well-being depends on personal choices; individuals with a balanced physique tend to live longer than obese individuals. Therefore, daily attention to body control is essential.

Even though not as elaborate as the wealthy, attention to a balanced diet is necessary; ensure a nutritious balance while eating full. Include easily digestible foods to maintain body equilibrium. Those who perform heavy tasks, in the process, are already exercising; however, it’s vital to strike a balance between work and rest, avoiding excessive fatigue which can lead to overweight issues. Personal body management should be a priority in daily life.

It’s evident that “the poor are getting fatter, the wealthy are getting thinner,” this statement indeed holds some truth. Different environments and varying mindsets can lead to anomalies as a normal phenomenon. However, this is not absolute; fat or thinness doesn’t solely depend on wealth but on one’s self-discipline, maintaining a good physique, not only for appearance but also for good health.
