Children’s hair being sparse, what’s going on?

Must read

Many parents often worry about their children’s sparse hair, thinking it may be due to a lack of calcium or other nutritional deficiencies, further worrying that this may affect their children’s healthy growth. In fact, there are many misunderstandings about the issue of children’s thin hair. Here are some relevant factors:

Genetics play an important role in children’s hair characteristics, including color, curliness, and quantity.

During fetal development up to 5 to 6 months, there is a natural shedding process of fetal hair. Babies with less fetal hair shedding at birth appear to have more hair, while babies with more shedding usually have their hair gradually thickened around the age of one.

Hair growth speed varies due to individual differences, with some children having denser hair earlier, and others a little later – all of which are normal phenomena.

Lack of trace elements such as calcium, zinc, iron, etc., may also affect hair growth. For example, sparse hair on the back of the head (occipital baldness) is often related to calcium deficiency.

Regarding hair care, the following two suggestions are provided:

1. Clean the baby’s scalp regularly. Babies grow rapidly, have vigorous metabolism, and are prone to the accumulation of sebum and sweat, which may clog hair follicles, affect hair growth, and even damage hair follicles. It is recommended to use mild, non-irritating baby shampoo every two days to clean the baby’s hair.

2. Get appropriate sunlight. During mild sunlight hours, taking the baby outdoors can utilize UV light for sterilization, promote scalp health and hair growth, and facilitate calcium absorption.

In conclusion, children’s sparse hair may be due to various factors, and specific treatment can only be administered after identifying the cause. When faced with the situation of children having less hair, parents need not overly worry and can seek professional examinations to understand the specific reasons and take corresponding measures.
