Recently, some netizens posted on social media recommending others to “sunbathe their backs” during the hottest days of summer to achieve weight loss without spending any money. Some even claimed that persisting in “sunbathing” for a month helped them lose some weight. However, some netizens reported experiencing diarrhea after trying this weight loss method. Others mentioned symptoms of heat stroke after attempting “sunbathing” for weight loss, resulting in waste instead of savings.
Some traditional Chinese medicine experts mentioned that “sunbathing” has certain health benefits but does not have a direct weight loss effect, and each session of “sunbathing” should be kept under half an hour. Nutritionists also stated that “sunbathing” is one way for the body to increase Vitamin D but solely relying on it for weight loss is not effective.
Netizens claim that “sunbathing” during the hottest days of summer can help with weight loss.
Is it really reliable?
As the hottest days of summer approach, many citizens are searching for ways to beat the heat. However, some netizens recently posted photos online, mentioning that lying on the grass under the sun, exposing their backs to sun rays, can lead to weight loss. They mentioned that this method is cost-effective and shows significant results, stating that “during the hottest days of the year, ‘sunbathing’ is the most effective, missing it means waiting for another year.” On July 13, a netizen posted on social media that they found the hottest days suitable for “sunbathing” to lose weight, mentioning, “Last year, I persisted in sunbathing for over a month and lost a considerable amount of weight.”
However, some netizens shared feedback that after “sunbathing” for a midday during the hottest days of summer, they did not experience weight loss but instead felt uncomfortable and had diarrhea.
Netizens’ attempt at weight loss through “sunbathing”
Resulted in heat stroke symptoms
Some netizens mentioned that
They gave up after only sweating and no weight loss
A netizen who attempted weight loss through “sunbathing” told reporters that she saw a post on social media explaining how to lose weight through “sunbathing” and decided to try it, thinking it would be an easy method. She even purchased a set of clothes designed for “sunbathing,” leaving the back area exposed.
“I went to ‘sunbathe’ on the afternoon of July 11 when the sunlight was very intense, thinking it would be more effective. However, after about half an hour of sunbathing, I felt extremely nauseous and felt like vomiting.” The netizen mentioned that she visited a hospital, and the doctor diagnosed her with heat stroke symptoms, mentioning that her body was not suitable for “sunbathing,” and it might not necessarily lead to weight loss. She intended to save money and lose weight using this method but ended up discarding the clothes after using them only once, along with the medical expenses, leading to a loss of a few hundred yuan.
Another netizen shared that she saw the method of weight loss through “sunbathing” during the hottest days last year but felt that besides sweating, there were no noticeable weight loss effects, so she gave up this year.
Traditional Chinese medicine experts advise that
“Sunbathing” should not exceed half an hour per session
Nutritionists state that
Relying solely on “sunbathing” for weight loss is ineffective
A TCM expert at a top-tier hospital in Beijing told reporters that from a TCM perspective, “sunbathing” helps replenish the body’s Yang Qi and promotes health by dispelling dampness. However, “sunbathing” alone does not have a direct weight loss effect and may not be suitable for everyone.
The expert mentioned that when an ordinary person “sunbathes,” they should pay attention to the duration, keeping it within half an hour per session. It is advisable not to choose noon when the sun shines the brightest but to opt for the time between 10 am and 11 am or 3 pm to 4 pm. “Sunbathing is not a case where the longer, the better.” Finally, the expert mentioned that “sunbathing” does not have to be confined to the hottest days of summer; for older adults, sunbathing in winter can also have health benefits.
Professor Fan Zhihong from China Agricultural University and a member of the Chinese Nutrition Society stated that from a nutritional perspective, the body needs to be exposed to sunlight to absorb Vitamin D. In this regard, “sunbathing” is one way for the body to increase Vitamin D. The goal of weight loss is to reduce body fat, and relying solely on “sunbathing” for weight loss is ineffective.
Fan Zhihong mentioned that to lose weight, one must first avoid unhealthy eating habits, adopt regular exercise, avoid staying up late, ensure proper sleep, and reduce stress, all of which contribute to weight loss.
