The supermarket is bustling with people, filling their shopping carts with a variety of fruits, vegetables, and snacks.

The two main characters of the story ran into each other unexpectedly.

Teacher Liu, an old educator who has spent half her life teaching, has started to enjoy life after retirement. This time, she came to the supermarket to buy some fruits for herself and her spouse.

Both she and her spouse have varying degrees of high blood pressure, with her spouse being more severely affected and recently discharged from the hospital after treatment for their condition.

The doctor advised them to eat more fruits to supplement their vitamins and potassium.

She noticed the bright yellow sugar oranges in front of her and felt tempted, picking one up.

Sugar oranges are a staple during the New Year in many households. This fruit doesn’t require washing, is ready to eat once peeled, has a sweet and sour taste, and is inexpensive.

While she was holding a plastic bag to pick the sugar oranges, a familiar face approached her, “Teacher Liu, are you out buying fruits too?”

The newcomer is Doctor Zhang, who lives in the same neighborhood as Teacher Liu. Noticing the full bag of sugar oranges in her hand, he asked curiously, “Teacher Liu, I heard that your spouse just got out of the hospital due to high blood pressure, so why are you eating sugar oranges?”

“Yes,” Teacher Liu nodded, “I heard that oranges are rich in vitamins and fiber, which can boost immunity, so I bought some for my spouse now that the temperature has dropped to prevent them from getting sick.”

Doctor Zhang nodded in approval, saying, “It’s great that you have this awareness, but besides being rich in vitamin C and fiber, oranges also contain a lot of sugar, and overconsumption can raise blood sugar levels and worsen high blood pressure symptoms.”

Teacher Liu, surprised, dropped the orange, and Doctor Zhang continued, “Eating too much sugar orange can turn your hands yellow due to the abundant carotene in it, and for those with high blood pressure, excessive intake can lead to carotenemia, resulting in symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea.”

After hearing this, Teacher Liu poured all the oranges back onto the shelf.

“Doctor Zhang, I didn’t expect a simple orange to have so much knowledge behind it; after what you said, I’m afraid to eat fruits now.”

“Ah, isn’t that what being ill is like? You can’t eat this and can’t eat that. There are four common fruits on the supermarket shelves that patients with high blood pressure should avoid.”

First is durian. Those who love durian know that although this tropical fruit smells bad, it is deliciously sweet when eaten, and the better the durian, the sweeter it is.

Though durian is delicious, patients with high blood pressure must not overeat it; 100 grams a day is already considered the limit.

Durian is rich in sugar and too high in calories; a small amount can supplement body nutrition, but overeating can cause blood pressure to “skyrocket” and even lead to digestive issues and weight gain.

The second is the common fruit—grapes. In the summer and autumn, various kinds of grapes can be seen on supermarket shelves and in markets, and it’s common to eat a whole bunch at once.

A search online for “high blood pressure grapes” shows many recommendations for patients to eat grapes.

This is because grapes contain flavonoids, which are beneficial for lowering blood pressure. Grape seeds are rich in potassium, which can effectively lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
