A one-month-old baby spits up a lot of milk

Must read

Methods to improve a baby’s spit-up situation involve multiple aspects, including breastfeeding posture, burping, controlling feeding amounts, and protecting the baby’s stomach. First, when breastfeeding, it’s best for the mother to hold the baby in a sitting position, with the head slightly elevated above the body, which helps reduce the phenomenon of spitting up caused by milk reflux. After feeding, the baby should be held upright and gently patted on the back, moving along the middle of the spine until the baby burps, in order to expel swallowed air and reduce spit-up.

Considering that a baby’s stomach capacity is limited, even for a month-old infant, it is important to feed smaller amounts more frequently to avoid discomfort caused by overfeeding at one time. Additionally, keeping the baby’s stomach warm is also crucial to prevent spitting up caused by gastrointestinal cramps from being chilled. Ensure that the baby is well-covered with a blanket while sleeping, particularly to keep the abdominal area warm.

In daily care, maintaining a stable feeding method is vital for the development of the baby’s digestive system. Frequent changes in formula or living environment may exacerbate spitting up issues. When burping, one must ensure that the baby actually burps, rather than just performing the gesture. The correct burping gesture involves keeping the fingers together, forming a cup shape with the palm, patting with moderate force to create vibrations that help with gas expulsion, without causing discomfort to the baby. It is recommended to burp the baby several times during feeding, especially for those prone to gas or very hungry babies; beginning burping early during feeding can effectively prevent gas and spit-up.

If the baby spits up, subsequent cleaning should not be overlooked to prevent skin irritation from residual milk, especially since the baby’s skin is delicate and easily reddened by irritants. Therefore, it is necessary to clean the baby and change clothes promptly to maintain skin health.

As time goes by, most babies will gradually adapt, and the spitting-up situation will likely improve. During this period, the parents’ patience and careful cleaning care are particularly important.
