Child crying and not sleeping in the postpartum period

Must read

After becoming a new mom, facing the delicate baby, many mothers may feel inexperienced, especially when the baby continues to cry at night and refuses to fall asleep, it can be distressing. At this time, first check if the baby is hungry or feeling insecure, while gradually helping them establish a regular sleep routine is crucial.

The rhythm of life while the baby was in the mother’s belly may affect their sleep patterns. If the mother had less sleep during pregnancy, the baby may develop similar habits, making it difficult to sleep after birth. In addition, newborns need to be fed about every two hours and given water appropriately to prevent getting too warm. Ensure the room temperature is suitable, avoid excessive wrapping as babies’ body temperature is usually slightly higher than adults, overheating can affect their sleep. As long as the baby is in good spirits, not crying frequently without reason, there is no need to worry excessively, as this situation often improves naturally as they grow up.

For newborns, skin-to-skin contact with parents can provide a sense of security, which is one of their emotional needs. Through hugging and touching, not only can it comfort the baby but also is an effective way to strengthen the parent-child relationship.

Cultivating independent, good sleep habits for the baby is equally important. Having the baby sleep in a comfortable bed not only aids in deep sleep but also promotes cardiovascular function, skeletal development, and boosts immunity. On the contrary, prolonged carrying to sleep may result in shallow sleep for the baby, feeling unwell after waking up, limiting limb movement, hindering muscle relaxation, and potentially affecting breathing quality and metabolism. In the long run, this is not conducive to the child forming independent living habits. Therefore, although carrying provides warmth and care, timely letting go is more beneficial for the baby’s growth.
