Is it normal for baby’s stool to be watery?

Must read

For new parents, due to the delicate nature of babies, they are always extra cautious, fearing the slightest harm, especially in terms of diet. Sometimes, when babies drink milk powder, their stools may become watery, which greatly worries parents, inevitably making them wonder: Is this situation normal?

This condition may be related to allergies or lactose intolerance, which may cause damage to the intestinal wall. Babies who are breastfed are less likely to have lactose intolerance issues, but it is important to note that milk allergy is often misunderstood as lactose intolerance. Even if the baby does not directly consume milk, a mother consuming dairy products may trigger an allergic reaction in the baby, especially for formula-fed babies. It is recommended to suspend milk powder feeding, and the mother should also avoid all dairy intake to determine if the baby is allergic to dairy products.

It is worth noting that breast milk, due to its easily digestible nature, usually results in baby stools being golden yellow, with a looser texture and containing tiny particles. If the stool is watery and foamy, it may be due to the baby consuming more foremilk and lacking hindmilk. Foremilk has low fat content and is quickly expelled through the digestive system, which may lead to thin stools, more foam, and sometimes a slight greenish tint. In contrast, hindmilk, rich in fat, takes longer to digest. The method to improve this situation is to ensure the baby fully nurses on one breast before switching to the other side, allowing the baby to stop nursing on their own before switching sides.

Infant stools appearing watery are not an ideal norm; for babies under breastfeeding, stools are mostly yellow or golden yellow, which is more normal. Therefore, when a baby’s stool appears watery, parents should pay attention, promptly investigate the cause, and take appropriate measures.
