Newborn respiratory distress, how to provide care

Must read

Respiratory system diseases are widely present, closely related to environmental quality. With the worsening of environmental pollution, the incidence of such diseases has significantly increased, with groups with weak constitutions being especially susceptible. Premature infants are one of the high-risk groups, often facing respiratory distress. The specific manifestations of neonatal respiratory distress may include normal crying at birth, but rapidly developing into respiratory distress, groaning, restlessness, and even apnea within a few hours, with the skin turning bluish-gray. In severe cases, infants may die within three days of birth. Fortunately, for infants with milder conditions, the onset of the disease occurs slightly later, usually within one to two days after birth, with relatively mild symptoms. With appropriate treatment, many can show improvement within a few days.

Nursing measures for neonatal respiratory distress mainly include: firstly, the affected child will be immediately placed in a neonatal intensive care unit, receiving round-the-clock care from a professional medical team. Secondly, care for premature infants is more meticulous, requiring placement in an incubator and continuous monitoring of vital signs such as temperature, respiratory rate, and heart rate using monitoring devices. For infants with swallowing difficulties, intravenous fluids are administered to ensure proper nutrition. Moreover, ensuring unobstructed airways is crucial, and providing appropriate oxygen therapy based on the degree of hypoxia is essential. Mild cases may use nasal prongs, face masks, or continuous positive airway pressure support; in severe cases, endotracheal intubation may be necessary with the assistance of a ventilator for breathing support, and treatment plans will be flexibly adjusted according to the infant’s actual condition.

The care for premature infants with respiratory distress not only involves immediate life-saving measures but also emphasizes the importance of preventive measures. During pregnancy, timely identification of potential risks and interventions can effectively reduce the risk of preterm birth, thereby preventing the occurrence of neonatal respiratory distress and establishing the first line of defense for infant life safety.
