**What to do if the child has a white spot and is in pain while breastfeeding**

Must read

During the breastfeeding process, mothers may encounter some challenges, such as lumps in the breast, white spots on the nipples, and breast pain. White spots on the nipples are usually caused by three different reasons, each requiring different treatments. Next, let’s discuss how to deal with the situation when white spots appear on the nipples, causing pain during breastfeeding.

One scenario is when small blister-like white spots appear on the nipples, containing fluid and covered with a transparent film. This condition is often accompanied by overall breast pain and milk accumulation. To address this, you can use erythromycin ointment for disinfection, or sterilize a fine needle with medical alcohol, gently pierce the white spot to release milk, which helps relieve swelling.

Another scenario is when the white spots do not have the characteristics of blisters, feeling like grains of rice when touched, and causing increased nipple pain during breastfeeding. In this case, you can first apply erythromycin ointment, wait for a moment, then gently squeeze the “white spot” while wiping in one direction with gauze or cotton swab until the “rice grains” are cleared. After completion, disinfect again and clean the breast before the next feeding.

Another common issue is nipple ulcer, presenting as nipple pain, which can occur regardless of milk accumulation. Ulcers appear as small white sores and can cause discomfort during breastfeeding. Facing nipple ulcers, it’s essential to clean the affected area before feeding. If the baby also has mouth ulcers or cracks, direct breastfeeding should be temporarily suspended, and prompt medical treatment for the ulcers is necessary to prevent mutual influence. For mothers with uncertain symptoms, it is advisable to seek professional medical diagnosis first to ensure breast health. Once diagnosed with mastitis, follow the doctor’s guidance for treatment. Maintain strict disinfection measures when taking any action and pay attention to the baby’s oral condition to prevent cross-infection.
