Due to the hot summer weather, the body’s metabolism accelerates, appetite decreases, making it the best time for weight loss. Recently, the Endocrinology Department of Wenzhou Central Hospital has welcomed waves of weight loss trends. Many people want to seize this summer window to implement their weight loss plans. The medical staff at the “Sugar Obesity Center” of Wenzhou Central Hospital use professional techniques and a rigorous work attitude to tailor personalized weight loss plans for each obese patient.
The “Adult Obesity Dietary Guidelines (2024 Edition)” released by the National Health Commission shows that the overweight and obesity rates for residents aged 18 and above in China have reached 34.3% and 16.4%, respectively. The obesity rate is on the rise, and it is estimated that by 2035, the global number of obese people will reach an astonishing 1.9 billion. Of particular concern is the doubling of childhood obesity between 2020 and 2035. Obesity not only affects appearance but also plays a critical role in various diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and breast cancer. Preventing and treating obesity is urgent.
❖
At the “Sugar Obesity Center” of Wenzhou Central Hospital, medical staff conduct necessary blood tests on each patient undergoing weight loss to differentiate between pathological and physiological obesity.
Pathological obesity includes Cushing’s syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome, hypothyroidism, etc. The medical staff at the “Sugar Obesity Center” actively treat primary diseases and combine weight loss principles for physiological obesity to develop specific and high-quality weight loss plans tailored to each patient’s condition.
The weight loss principles for physiological obesity are controlling food intake and increasing physical activity.
Controlling total energy intake and maintaining a balanced diet are key to weight management. The “Adult Obesity Dietary Guidelines (2024 Edition)” recommend energy proportions for the three macronutrients: fat 20%-30%, protein 15%-20%, carbohydrates 50%-60%. The guidelines suggest reducing daily energy intake by 300-500 kcal. It is advisable to choose a low-energy, low-carb, low-fat, and moderate-quality protein weight loss diet, moderate control of refined grains, and meat consumption. It is recommended to have a meal ratio of 3:4:3 for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, avoiding eating too late for dinner and having meals between 17:00-19:00.
According to clinical guidelines, weight loss seekers should engage in moderate exercise for 150-300 minutes per week or vigorous exercise for 75-150 minutes per week, along with resistance training 2-3 times a week, with a total energy expenditure of over 2000 kcal/week. Resistance muscle strength exercises should be done every other day for 10-20 minutes each time. Increase exercise gradually and ensure safety during exercise.
In addition to these, several weight loss tips should be considered, such as setting weight loss goals. Research shows that setting weight loss goals can increase the success rate of achieving at least a 10% weight loss within 12 months compared to not setting goals. Changing the meal order appropriately by following the sequence of “vegetables-meat-staple food” helps reduce the consumption of high-energy foods and increase fiber intake. Dark-colored vegetables like spinach, celery, broccoli, kale, tomatoes, purple onions, pumpkins, seaweed, etc., are beneficial. Utilize leisure time and adhere to the principle of “avoid sitting when possible.” Studies show that reducing sedentary time by 30 minutes per day can lead to significant weight loss over time. Maintain a relaxed mood, ensure adequate sleep, go to bed before 23:00, and get 8 hours of sleep every day.
For patients for whom weight loss through lifestyle changes is difficult, medication therapy can be considered.
Friendly reminder
Weight health is crucial and weight loss is either an all-or-nothing endeavor. Consistency is key in weight loss, so persevere.
