Can probiotics and milk powder be mixed together for infants?

Must read

The digestive system of infants is relatively fragile, as various systems in their bodies are still developing. Therefore, infants may experience digestive issues, such as constipation or diarrhea, after consuming certain foods. Probiotics, as a digestive aid that helps regulate intestinal flora balance, have been chosen by many parents to help improve their infants’ digestive conditions. Naturally, parents may be concerned about whether probiotics can be mixed with formula for infants to drink.

In fact, probiotics can be mixed with formula quite well; the key is to control the water temperature and avoid it being too high. High temperatures can accelerate the activity of probiotics and trigger fermentation; when the temperature exceeds 60℃, probiotics gradually lose their activity. Therefore, it is recommended to add probiotics after the formula has been prepared and the temperature has slightly lowered to ensure their viability is not compromised.

As for when it is suitable for infants to supplement with probiotics, here are some suggestions:

From the last month of pregnancy, expectant mothers can start taking supplements containing infant bifidobacteria and continue during breastfeeding, so that infants can acquire probiotics through the maternal body.

When an infant experiences indigestion, milk intolerance, acute or chronic diarrhea, hard stools, or nutritional deficiencies due to malabsorption, probiotics can be appropriately administered.

Infants who are delivered by cesarean section and those who are not breastfed may have limited sources of intestinal probiotics and may show symptoms such as weak constitution, poor appetite, or dry stools; therefore, considering probiotic supplementation is necessary.

During special periods when immune enhancement is needed, such as seasonal changes or disease outbreaks, probiotic supplementation can serve as a preventive measure.

When traveling, carrying probiotic products is advisable; if an infant experiences gastrointestinal discomfort, timely administration can effectively alleviate symptoms.

When administering probiotics to infants, the following points should be noted:

Use cooled boiled water to prepare probiotic powder containing infant bifidobacteria, and it is best to consume it immediately after preparation to maintain its activity.

A small amount of probiotic powder can be applied to a nipple or bottle, allowing the infant to naturally intake it while sucking.

Proper utilization of probiotics while paying attention to preparation methods and administration details can effectively help infants maintain intestinal health.
