What should I do if my four-month-old baby has diarrhea?

Must read

Babies have relatively weak immune systems, making them susceptible to diarrhea during seasonal changes or significant temperature fluctuations. If a four-month-old baby experiences diarrhea, it is important to take them to the hospital promptly for professional diagnosis to identify the cause, which will facilitate appropriate treatment and help the baby recover quickly.

It is crucial to take corresponding relief measures for different types of diarrhea. For instance, if the baby has frequent stools that are yellow-green and resemble egg drop soup, accompanied by blood streaks or mucus, and even with little food intake, the stools may have a fishy odor. The baby may cry or seem irritable during bowel movements, which is often caused by pathogenic E. coli. In such cases, it is necessary to use appropriate anti-inflammatory medications, digestive aids, and oral rehydration salts to replenish fluids. Typically, improvement can be expected within four to five days.

Another common type of diarrhea in infants is known as “autumn diarrhea,” caused by rotavirus infection. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, cough, and runny nose, similar to cold symptoms. The stools are watery, thin, and voluminous with no obvious fishy smell, accompanied by discomfort and irritability in the baby. This type of diarrhea is resistant to antibiotics, and treatment focuses on enhancing the baby’s own resistance. Supportive measures can include certain traditional Chinese medicines and digestive medications (such as one tablet each time, three times a day of Bifidobacterium), as well as oral rehydration salts. Recovery typically occurs within about a week, while severe cases may require further intervention at the hospital.

During diarrhea, it is particularly important to keep the baby warm and maintain cleanliness in the surrounding environment to avoid further issues caused by unclean food. When breastfeeding, mothers should reduce the intake of greasy foods and avoid cold foods like watermelon to lessen the baby’s digestive burden.
