Netizen Anne (alias) has long been troubled by dysmenorrhea. She heard that sunbathing can relieve menstrual pain, so she regularly wears sun-protective clothing on Saturday and Sunday mornings, holds a bottle of hot water, armed to the teeth, sits on a small stool facing the sun’s direction, and enjoys the summer “roasting.” “This is much cheaper than doing external treatments like moxibustion outside, and I hope more low-cost health-preserving projects like this can emerge.”

Tiantian (alias) said that recently, except on rainy days, as long as the sun is out, she will find an empty patch of grass, lie on her picnic mat in her sports underwear, and sunbathe. “During the process of sunbathing, I feel joyful. After sunbathing for almost half a month, my skin visibly became brighter.” Not only that, Tiantian also found that her long-term weight loss efforts through salad consumption suddenly achieved results, and her complexion became rosier. “It’s more effective than medical aesthetics.”

Sunbathing

Weight loss, dispelling cold dampness,

Relieving menstrual pain, bringing joy……

Is sunbathing really as magical as described online?

Associate Chief Physician of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine at the Third Hospital of Changsha City, Dr. Xiao Zhi, said she also noticed the popular sunbathing behavior online. Firstly, she affirmed the health benefits of sunbathing from a traditional Chinese medicine perspective. She explained that in traditional Chinese medicine, “the abdomen is yin, and the back is yang,” the back is the yang meridian of the body and has two major meridians, one of which is the Du meridian that governs the body’s yang qi, also known as the “sea of yang meridians.” Sunbathing in the summer can have a yang-boosting effect, which can nourish the yang qi. Dr. Xiao stressed that the yang energy governs the entire body, affecting one’s vitality and mental state, making it crucial for longevity and mental well-being.

Regarding the mentioned benefits of sunbathing online, Dr. Xiao explained from a physiological perspective that sunbathing can improve the constitution of individuals who manifest symptoms of aversion to cold, pallor, irregular bowel movements, swelling and bloating of the face and limbs, indicating a cold and damp physique; sunbathing can also help in vitamin D supplementation for bone health; in terms of weight management, sunbathing can boost metabolism in women by supplementing yang energy, aiding in fat burning; from a psychological perspective, traditional Chinese medicine often attributes liver qi stagnation, damp phlegm obstruction, and accumulation of cold and dampness in the body to mental conditions. Sunbathing to nourish yang can have a relieving effect.

How to sunbathe correctly?

“Treating winter diseases in summer” is an important health concept in traditional Chinese medicine, which emphasizes the harmony between individuals and the environment as well as the seasonal changes. The “dog days” period is when the sun’s yang energy is at its peak during the year. Dr. Xiao believes that sunbathing to nourish yang during this time can be particularly effective. The best time for sunbathing is when the UV rays are not very strong, such as between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. and between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Initially, the duration of sunbathing should not be too long, starting with 15 minutes and gradually increasing based on individual tolerance, with about an hour being sufficient.

In terms of sunbathing frequency, Dr. Xiao recommends sunbathing every five days from a Chinese medicine health perspective, adjusting as needed based on individual requirements.

Furthermore, Dr. Xiao advises that all health and treatment practices should avoid harm. The main premise of sunbathing in summer is to prevent sunburn and heatstroke. Therefore, she suggests eating something an hour before sunbathing and using sunscreen.

During sunbathing, it is important to drink plenty of water to replenish the body’s lost fluids and prepare for preventing heatstroke. After sunbathing, do not immediately expose yourself to cool air or enter an air-conditioned room; there should be a gradual transition. “During sunbathing, wear sun-protective clothing and apply sunscreen.” Dr. Xiao emphasizes the importance of keeping the back warm and avoiding sunburn from UV rays.

Who can sunbathe more?

Traditional Chinese medicine believes in the correspondence between heaven and humanity, and sun exposure is a good method to invigorate blood circulation, harmonize yin and yang energies, stimulate the body’s disease resistance, improve metabolism, and more. The sunlight during the “dog days” is the best time to dispel pathogenic influences and enhance yang energy.

These three types of people can sunbathe appropriately:

1. Those with chronic illnesses

Such as metabolic syndrome, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, allergic cough, rhinitis, pharyngitis, dysmenorrhea, chronic gynecological inflammation; by sweating during the “dog days” to invigorate qi, warm yang, dispel chill, and prevent diseases common in winter.

2. People in suboptimal health

Individuals with poor gastrointestinal function, susceptibility to colds, sensitivity to temperature changes, cold limbs and back, low physical activity, high stress levels, etc., can enhance the body’s self-regulation ability through sunbathing during the “dog days,” especially in terms of temperature regulation and autonomic nervous system function.

3. Those with yang deficiency and dampness accumulation

Individuals who are sensitive to cold, have cold limbs, fatigue, lack vitality, and exhibit signs like a swollen tongue with tooth marks or thick, greasy tongue coating, indicating yang deficiency and dampness accumulation, can benefit from sunbathing during the “dog days” to stimulate blood and qi circulation, improve yang deficiency, and dispel cold and dampness.

These individuals should be cautious!

Those with UV allergies, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, coronary heart disease, pregnant women, or individuals with excess internal heat are not recommended to sunbathe; it is advisable to follow professional medical advice.
