#Recording my 2024#
Time flies, next week on August 7th is the Beginning of Autumn. The Beginning of Autumn not only marks the first solar term of autumn, but also signifies the formal start of the early autumn season.
Although the weather gradually becomes cooler after the Beginning of Autumn, the lingering heat known as the “autumn tiger” persists, with temperatures remaining relatively high and humidity levels being high as well. During this transitional period of the season, attention should also be paid to diet.
As the saying goes, “Do not eat the five grains after the Beginning of Autumn, if eaten, autumn will be restless.”
Especially for middle-aged and elderly people whose body functions are relatively weak and digestive capabilities have declined, it is recommended that they be cautious with their diet during the Beginning of Autumn, consume less of the following 5 types of food, eat seasonally, and smoothly transition into autumn.
1. Do not eat chilled fruits and cold drinks
Although the weather is still hot after the Beginning of Autumn, the yang energy of the human body has started to gradually converge, and at this time, the digestive function of the spleen and stomach is relatively weak.
If too much chilled and cold drinks are consumed, it may lead to a cold invasion of the spleen and stomach, affecting digestion, and may even cause symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea, especially during the morning and evening, it is advisable to consume chilled fruits and cold drinks less or not at all.
2. Do not eat black fungus soaked overnight
During the Beginning of Autumn, it is still in the high-temperature period of the “autumn tiger”. In such hot temperatures, it is particularly important to pay attention to the amount of soaked black fungus, and it is best to consume it on the same day it is soaked, within 6 hours.
Avoid consuming black fungus soaked overnight, as during the soaking process, black fungus is prone to breeding bacteria and toxins. Especially black fungus soaked for more than 6 hours may generate toxic substances such as citric acid. Middle-aged and elderly people tend to be frugal in life, but when it comes to eating black fungus, one must ensure to advise the elderly family members not to eat black fungus that has been soaked for too long.
3. Do not eat overnight leftover rice and dishes
Leftover rice and dishes are prone to bacteria and toxins. Especially in hot summer weather, bacteria multiply more rapidly. If spoiled leftover rice and dishes are consumed, it may lead to food poisoning and symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. Therefore, when consuming leftover rice and dishes, middle-aged and elderly people should observe the color, smell, and taste of the food. If any signs of spoilage are detected, it should be discarded immediately and not eaten.
4. Do not eat moldy dried vegetables
Dried vegetables are common in daily life, such as dried turnip, winter melon, dried chilies, dried beans, dried eggplants, and dried lettuce, etc. These sun-dried vegetables have a completely different texture from fresh vegetables and are popular among people.
However, after drying, dried vegetables tend to absorb moisture and are particularly prone to mold growth, especially in hot seasons. If you see mold on dried vegetables at home, do not eat them. Moldy dried turnip may contain mycotoxins. Consuming moldy dried turnip may lead to food poisoning and symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. Therefore, when consuming dried turnip, ensure to choose dry and odorless options. Carefully inspect before consumption to ensure there is no mold before eating.
5. Do not eat spoiled cured meats
Cured meats are traditional meat products with a unique flavor, and many households may still have cured sausages and meats pickled from the previous autumn and winter seasons.
When consuming them, it is essential to carefully check whether the cured sausages and meats have spoiled or molded, especially in hot seasons, where cured meats are prone to contamination by bacteria and mold during the preservation process. If improperly stored or consumed spoiled cured meats, it may lead to food poisoning and symptoms such as abdominal pain. If you notice a change in taste or mold on the cured meats, they should be discarded immediately.
The older generation often says, “Do not eat the five grains after the Beginning of Autumn, if eaten, autumn will be restless.” With the Beginning of Autumn approaching, adjustments should be made in diet, eating more fresh vegetables and fruits, consuming seasonal foods, and smoothly transitioning into autumn.
