Walking can alleviate anxiety.
In 1992, the World Health Organization clearly stated: the best exercise in the world is walking.
Related research also indicates: walking daily can not only ease emotions but also improve sleep.
During the initial restructuring and transformation of New Oriental, founder Yu Minhong often found himself anxious and unable to sleep: How should the future path be navigated? What is the risk of transformation? What does the future hold?…….
A series of troubling questions weighed heavily on him, causing increasing anxiety and distress, leaving him listless, and he needed sleeping pills every night to fall asleep. He said, “At my worst, I needed to take 4 sleeping pills to be able to sleep.”
One time, while on a business trip to Canada, he stood on the twentieth floor looking out of an open window, and in a daze, nearly jumped out.
Later, thinking about his children, he halted his steps toward the window, then put on a down jacket and walked for four hours in the -30 degree Celsius streets.
During the walk, he emptied his mind, not allowing his brain to think of anything. Remarkably, the anxiety that had troubled him for so long was alleviated through walking, and he became calm and composed, with his sleep becoming more stable.
Since then, he has always regarded walking as the “most reliable” way to relieve anxiety. The process of walking is also a way to clear oneself; it allows one to escape the noise and disturbances and gain a renewed self.
Famous Russian writer Tolstoy also regarded walking as a secret to relieve anxiety and stress. At one point, he encountered a creative block, feeling restless and unable to focus on anything, so he wandered aimlessly on the road.
As he walked, he suddenly realized that with each step, the previously intense anxiety seemed to diminish, and his mood became cheerful and relaxed. When he returned home, energized, he picked up a pen and found an endless flow of inspiration, writing with ease.
Goethe said, “Only movement can remove all kinds of doubts.”
The benefits of walking are not just physical; it is also effective for regulating emotions.
If you are currently troubled by anxiety, why not give walking a try?
Allow yourself to stroll amidst nature, letting your body and mind unwind in the fragrance of flowers and the sound of birds.
When you bravely take that step, all the anxiety and pain that life brings you will dissipate in that moment.
