Must read

Tomorrow is the End of Heat (Chushu), remember “do not do 3 things, do not eat 2 things”, so that family members get sick less and stay healthy through the autumn!

Time flies like an arrow, unconsciously, tomorrow will enter the period of End of Heat. The arrival of End of Heat means that the hot summer is about to pass, and the cool autumn is about to come! At this time, with the autumn breeze blowing gently, the temperature is slowly dropping, the air is becoming dry, and our daily life and dietary habits need to be adjusted accordingly. During the End of Heat season, elderly people will remind us every year to remember “do not do 3 things, do not eat 2 things”, in order to keep our family members healthy and well through the autumn. Next, I will share with you the daily life and dietary habits during the period of End of Heat.

1. Do not do 3 things.

1. Do not excessively nourish the body.

After the arrival of End of Heat, many people think that it is a good time to nourish the body, so they start a regimen of nourishment, serving large fish, meats, and expensive delicacies. In fact, with good living conditions nowadays and usually eating well, most people do not need to purposely gain weight. Just a slight nourishment is enough, with dishes slightly richer than in summer; it is not necessary to excessively consume nourishing foods, as it is not beneficial to our health.

2. Do not overdo exercise.

During the End of Heat season, the temperature is comfortable, and many people start exercising in the morning. Moderate exercise is good, but one should not overexert themselves and end up breathless. Especially for middle-aged and elderly people, exercise should be done without overexertion, aiming to not get tired. Young people can choose slightly intense exercises like running and skipping rope, while middle-aged and elderly people should opt for brisk walking, playing ball games, or practicing Tai Chi, as these are more suitable for this season.

3. Do not stay up late or seek coolness excessively.

During the End of Heat season, daytime can still be hot, but nights are cool. Many people take this opportunity to work late into the night, not realizing that this is the transitional period from the sunny to the shady season. Staying up late regularly can lower immunity, reduce appetite, and worsen autumn fatigue. Therefore, after the End of Heat, it is best not to work late and instead adhere to a routine of early sleep and early rise. Also, avoid seeking excessive coolness; try not to use the air conditioner too much. If it is too hot, set a timer for the air conditioner to turn off after a while, rather than keeping it on all night, to prevent discomfort.

2. Do not eat 2 things.

1. Do not eat ginger.

Ginger is a commonly used seasoning known for its ability to dispel coldness, improve appetite, aid digestion, and stop vomiting. In summer, people eat ginger to dispel coldness. However, in autumn, ginger should be avoided, as it is a time to gather yang energy. Eating too much ginger in autumn can disperse the gathered yang energy, so it is advised not to eat ginger in autumn. There is an old saying: “In the whole year, do not eat ginger in autumn; in a day, do not eat ginger in the evening.”

2. Do not eat cold foods.

During the End of Heat season, there may still be some heat, and many people continue eating cold foods like chilled beer and large watermelons to quench their thirst, following their summer dietary habits. It is strongly recommended not to do so as it is already autumn. Avoid consuming too many cold foods like chilled drinks and beer; remove them from the dining table. Autumn melons like watermelon, cantaloupe, and bitter melon might cause stomach problems and are no longer suitable to eat. If you prefer fruits, you can choose peaches, grapes, and other fruits that help with hydration and dryness without harming the digestive system.
